WE hear that Mr. H. Leffler, late of the Scottish Oriental Company's steamer Phra Chula Chom Kino, has been appointed chief officer of the Chinese steamer Smith, Capt. Mackintosh, now running between Hongkong and Formosa, via Amoy.
THE alarming rumour got abroad on the 29th ulto. that a case of cholers had occurred on board a steamer which arrived from the North during the forenoon. On investigation it transpired that the third engineer of the Canton had been left in Swatow, having been attacked with dysentery, THE Mestageries Maritimes steamer Melbourne and a curious experience on her recent passage When she from Hongkong to Singapore. stopped at Cape St. James on the 17th ultimo, it was noliced that an enormous fish of the ray kind had got fixed on the vessel's stem. On being hoisted on deck, it weighed about 1,900 kilos (R60 lbs.) and measured ten feet across.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1890.
THE Ocean Co's steamship Nerfor, reported ashore near Holbow four days ago, arrived here on the 30th ulto. The vessel has received no damage whatever from the grounding, as she was lucky enough to stick fast on a sit sand-spit. SEVERAL Portuguese correspondents have written to us, repudiating the action of the so-called Portuguese Band in sending a bill for $50 to the Marina Co. for services they admit were never rendered. We cannot see our way to publish correspondence on such a subject; what has already appeared in our columns we shall be proud at any time to stand responsible for, and any row between the management of the Marina and the "Portuguese Band" must be settled amongst themselves either in the Supreme Court or at the end of a horse-whip. The summary method comes cheaper in the end. We speak from experience.
We learn from a Singapore contemporary that Lieut. Carlyle, RA, Inspector of Ordnance Machinery, who is the half man included in the garrison establishment of Singapore, (the other moiety of his services being due to where he will be permanently stationed.

On the afternoon of the 29th alte, while a number of the coolies were employed filling in the pond in the centre of the Race-course, one or two spectators went into the water for a bathe, In attempting to swim across for a wager of ten cents one unfortunate youth became exhausted, when about the centre of the pond, and was drowned, the coolies standing stupidly by and watching him.
THE Harbor Master (Commander Rumsey, R.N.) issued a notification to the local importers of oplum on the 28th ulto, to the effect that in future they would have to state, in their applications for of such removal. As that would cause very con siderable inconvenience, owing to the difficulty of dealing with large consigaments readily, a protest was made, and the Government are to be memorialised.
A MOST Interesting game at Polo was played at that Capt. John Pitman, one of the ablest sons permits to remove chests the day and hour and can speak with authority, maintain the Causeway Bay last Friday afternoon in the presence of a considerable number of spectators, all of whom, with one notable exception, were of the male persuasion, It is surprising, in view of the fact that there is no game mors. interesting to onlookers than polo, that so few ladies grace with their presence those most exciting triala of skill, which usually take place twice or thrice a week at East Point. Waiting for the completion of the Happy Valley, we suppose! THX following circular letter, dated August 28th, from Mesars. Gibb, Livingston, & Co., re the affairs of the Songei Koyah Planting Company, Ld., may have interest for some of our readers:
The amali crop (of tobacco), grown in this is not, to the General Managers great disappointment, yet ready for ship ment. Mr. Abrahamson is of opinion that it has been slamaged in the process of fermentation, while Mr. Kennedy does not agree with this view. This can only be tested by actual sale.
Mr. Wieeley has returned from Borneo, and reports the estate in good condition, the growing crop promiting, the weather favourable, and the health of the coolles satisfactory.

It gives us great pleasure to learn from Canton of the old country that has ever spent the best years of his life in the Far East, is once more a special persona grala with His Excellency the Viceroy of the Liang Kwang. In any other country but China the invaluable services rendered by Captain Pitinan after the outbreak of the Franco-Chinese reprisals, would have been recognised by a bestowal of the highest dignities, the most liberal rewards." And had Viceroy Chang Shu-shing lived there can be little doubt that the gallant naval veteran would not have been left unrewarded. But the old Chinese statesman- died at Whampoa of a broken heart, after a life's service to an ungrateful country, and the new Viceroy, Chang Chih-tung, dishonestly and dis- honourably repudiated the promises and respon- sibilities of his predecessors, and left Captain Pitman the hopeless creditor of the Canton Govemment for many thousands of dollars. And now, after the lapse of some years, the services of the Grand Secretary Pitman" are again required by the Canton authorities. Some local troubles are involved, and no one is half so com- petent to set these troubles right us Capt. Pitman. We consider that Viceroy L Han-chang has THEScandalous wharf arrangements to the west shown great judgment in recognising the special of the Central, Market, whence the Chinese qualifications for the duties involved of the Yaumati launches start, have long been a dis-plucky veteran who did more real service for the grace to the colony. The rapidly developing passenger traffic between Hongkong and Hung bam, Yaumati, and Chinese Kowloon makes it imperative that some sort of system and proper bariage arrangement should be made, at the Hongkong end of the line at any rate, for the safety of the travelling public. On the 30th ulto, as a crowd of passengers were making a rush to get on board one of those filthy rattle-traps locally dubbed passenger launches, two of them were precipitated into the water, and all but YESTERDAY morning (28th ulto.) the Siamese flag. ship that is to be the Makut Rajakumar, late the Filipinas-went out on a private trial, for the purpose of adjusting her compasses and testing a number of improvements which have been made at the instance of Mr. Ramsay, engineer in-charge. Perak Government Gazette of 25th July. It is especially satisfactory as shewing the estimation in which the Company and its Selama property are held by the Government:"The year under review has been remarkable for the attention given to lode mining. The Selama Tin Mining Company, undeterred by the want of success of the Hongkong and Shanghai Tin Mining Com pany, from the ruins of which it has sprung, has subscribed a large capital to thoroughly test the value of the Selama tin lode, and their work is now being prosecuted with much energy. This, gentlemen, is all the information have to lay before you" to-day, I bave carefully、 refrained from giving you any exaggerated idea of the. value of your property, as that value has still to be proved. It is not unreasonable, however, to expect that your hopes or fears, as the case may -be, will be realized within the next few months, and you may rely that whether the news be good or bad it will be immediately circulated, I confess that, to me at any rate, it is a disappoint- ment that during my short tenure of office as Chairman of the Company I am unable to meet you with any more definite, news. When the first of the three telegrams was received and circulated I hoped that it would be the fore- runner of others of an encouraging character. We have, however, unfortunately met with a temporary check in having our mine flooded, but I trust the delay will not be of long duration. Before moving the adoption of the Report and Statement of Accounts I shall be happy to give you any further information that you may require. Mr. Orange spoke in high terms of the plans, from which, he said, he deduced that tin bearing rock had been undoubtedly struck. He had visited many mines in Cornwall, and could assure the shareholders that they need not expect to have a tin mine of any site and importance without a great deal of water-he considered the existence of the spring a good sign. As to the question of where the shaft should be, it seemed to him judiciously located, but he questioned whether they would find two lodes, as one might tum out only a "fault," as bad been suggested in the report. But in any case the shaft would always be useful when another had to be sunk. Indeed, seeing how much capital the Company had, he was inclined to recommend that another be started, because as they were getting additional pumps for the present emergency they could so utilise the spare one. It was one thing to have plenty of money, and another thing to have plenty of patience,
The Chairman added that Mr. Warren would shortly be visiting Selama, pending which operations were being delayed, in order that he might report on the ground. He was a mining engineer of great experience, and great confidence them it was, thought inexpedient to enter upon was felt in his opinions. Until he had expressed any new venture-his report would guide them. As regarded the inundation, it was nothing of very great moment, and if the water had not risen too high they would probably drive a level above it. When the particulars, which had been

Mr. Orange took occasion to support the action of the Directors in sending down a mining engineer of such great experience.
The Chairman then proposed the adoption of the report.

The Chairman said-Gentlemen, the report has been in your hands for several days, and having received your attention will no doubt be accepted as rend. The statement of accounts calls for no comment from me, as I think it clearly states the various expenditures; and the small amount of $40,616,09 at debit of working account on 30th June, will doubtless be viewed with satisfaction. Its a matter of regret to your Directors, as it must be to you all, that the work at Selama is no further forward, but this is entirely due to the absence of a pump, which THE case against the Chinaman Yeok Boun Leng should have reached the mine much earlier, and for bigamy came on for further bearing at Penang to its being incomplete when it did arrive.
