Commercial.
-THE WEEK'S Share BUSINESS.
Hongkong, 23rd August, 1890.
We are glad to be again able to report that a large amount of business has been transacted during the week, at very good rates. The market has been strong and active, and stock has advanced daily in value, as will he seen from the particulars given below of business done.
Banks. Have further advanced from 226 per cent. to 237 per cent., and an extensive business has been done at the Intermediate rates, closing rather weak at 235 per cent. on account of the settlement.
On time, also, a very large business has been done at different rates, and closed with sellers at 239 per cent, for September, 241 per cent. for October, 244 per cent. for November and 248 per cent. for December.
New Issue also have steadily advanced from $180 to $205 per share, but for some days were very scarce. From this rate they were suddenly pushed up to 8220 per share, but dropped again to 8210, at which rate, a large number of shares changed hands.........
Marine Insurance,--Sales of China Traders have been reported at 71, and at this rate there are a number of shares on the market. Cantons are wanted at 117. at which rate. a small sale has been reported.
Fires.-Have been very strong and they are very difficult to get. Offers of $90 for China's and $362 for Hongkongs have been refused.
Docks. After being very quiet and neglected for a long time, a considerable number of shares have been picked up by strong investors at rates from 66 per cent, to 70 per cent. cash and also for September from 67 per cent. to 77 per cent. premium, the market closing strong.
Steamships.-Boats have been done at 37 cash, but this rate could not be main- tained long they are now weak at 361.
Douglas are also weak at 55. Indo- Chinas have been done at 30 per cent. dis, and also at 25 per cent. dis. at which rate there are further buyers. China- Manilas were done at $118 and are now wanted at 119.
Sugar Refineries.-China Sugars were In great demand, and sales have been made at 180 cash and they are now wanteri at 177 ex. div. Luzons have advanced from 105 to 120 cash and a large number of shares have changed hands at the Intermediate rates, but owing to the settlement they dropped to.118 and closed steady. A good many shares were also done on time at 122 for November and 123 December.
Wharf & Godown Co.-Small sales of this Company's scrip have been made at 78 ex, diz.
Land Investments.—Still remain neglect- ed and rates are nominally quoted at 90.
Mining Stocks.-Punjoms are utterly neglected at-6. Imuris were done at rates from 7 to 8 cash and also 8 to St for October, and closed weak at the latter rates. Balmorals are weak at 12h, there being no demand for this stock at present. A very large business has been done in Raubs at rates from 1.90 to 2ḥ cash.
Miscellaneous.-Trust and Loan shares were largely dealt in at rates from 16 to 17 cash, but closed with sellers at 17. Founders' shares were done at £tss. Ices were done at 104 cash and rates then dropped to 102, at which rate there are now sellers.
H. G. Brown & Co. are wanted at 50 cash, but there are no shares offering at this rate. A large number of Watsons' shares have been done at rates from 201 to 22 cash, and also from 22 to 24 for December. For further particulars see appended list.
