His Excellency FRANCIS FLEMING, C.M.G., Acting Governor.

By Permission of the Officer Commanding the A. & S. Highlanders, the Band of the Regiment will be in attendance, and will play Selections during the evening.

At a quarter past six o'clock yesterday evening a serious collision, which nearly resulted in loss of life, occurred in the harbour between the British steamship Diamond (1,030 tons), com-

At the time of the collision the Diamond was bound out to Singapore whither she was despatched by the Ban Mob hong, the local agents. When she was just in aliae between Kellet's Island and the Kowloon Point she, when going at fall speed, ran into the launch, which had been over to Kellet's Island for water. The crew of the launch, three in number, knew nothing of the approach of the steamer, although they were keeping the usual look out at, irrespective of the fact that the sun was low on the horizon at the time, the steamer, they say, gave them no warning of her rapid approach with the whistle. As the vessels were going on their respective courses it would appear that, seeing the launch must have been on the starboard bow of the steamship Diamond imme diately prior to the collision, had the steamer "ported" she would have passed the starm of ill-fated launch, which she struck amidships, and sent her almost instantaneously to the bottom. The captain of the launch in his re- post to-day said:"My so can see the steamer because sun have got too muchee low, and he no makee whistle, My hear the 'mate shout

out "get out of the road," and before can do anything he come into me, and bloke everything, and the launch fall down in the water." The

launch is valued at $7,000, and the Dock Com- pany have hopes of raising her in a day or two, when the full extent of the damage sustained by her can be estimated. The crew of the launch were rescued by a six-ared cutter of the Victer Emanuel which went to the rescue with the utmost promptitude; and took the half drowned men on board, where everything possible was done for them and whence, with a dollar or two in their pockets, they were sent on their way well-nigh rejoicing. The Diamond did not sustain damage by the collision, and after "standing by" for a few minutes and throwing one or twn life-bunys to the struggling men, which assisted one of them to keep afloat until the cutter came up, she proceeded on her voyage

Street, so in China whenever we talk of "the Bank or of "Binks," farther descrip- tion is unnecessary, and it is known at once that we mean the Hongkong and Shanghai. Back. Its present position proves that it has been well managed on the whole. It has indeed had its reverses, and twice, at least, in its history its shares have gone below par, but its recoveries have been magnificent. Noted for liberality to its staff, it has secured good servants; and if here and there one has not fulfilled all expectations, it still owes a great deal of its popularity to the courtesy and geniality of its managers, the forbearance where necessity, and the readiness to oblige, that have always characterised its officers from the highest down. The position it has now assumed, with

branches almost all over the world and assets

counted by tens of millions sterling, is, we feel in our hearts, a credit to all connected with China, and when we'read such a report as that just published, our first feeling is almost one of personal pride. There is a special reason why the directors may justly feel extra confidence now: the report shows that the Bank's basis is now so wide, that such a prolonged depression as exists at the seat of its head office, Hongkong, has had no detrimental effect, apparently, on the work of the half year.

The report is notable for what it does not say as well as for what it does reveal; and it must be owned that, as usual, it is very reticent; much more reticent than are the reparts of many of its English competitors. It is pleasant to the share- holders to read that the net profits for the hall year amount to nearly one-ar d-n-quarter millions of dollars; and to hear it confidently rumoured that the gross earnings were nearly twice that amount, or some two-and-a-half millions, say at the rate of 56 per cent. per annum on the paid-up capital. Even taking into consideration the fact that the recent rise in exchange came just when the bank had laid in its funds for the new season's operations, such a profit is almost phenomenal, and shows what good luck must have assisted
