After having kept open house for over thirty years, No. 818 Broadway, the most notorious gambling-house in the country has finally closed fis door. The police had no hand in the event, the act being entirely voluntary on the part of those who conducted the game.
Since its establishment in 1859 the place has enjoyed a high reputation for squareness. Joe Hall, the king gambler of New York, moved into 818 in 1859. John Morrissey, after winning Congressional honors and becoming a power in local palities, was offered and accepted a tempting partnership in the concern.
The result was one of the most gigantic gambling monopolies that could be imagined. For a long time in the seventies no gambling houses were permitted to exist in this city which did not get their virtual license from him by paying to him certain monthly sums, which the players believed he turned over to the authorities as fees for toleration.
John McCormack, who was Morrissey's partner there, gave the largest limit to faro betters that was ever dealt for in this town. If a patron wanted the limit removed McCormack not only accomandated him, but after abuffling the cards turned the fare box over and let the better draw the cards out himself, so as to insure perfect fairness. The story is often told that a certain sporting editor of this city more than once lost bis paper in betting against that game, in fact that he lost the largest bet that was ever decided by the turn of a sole card. The man was Gus and he lost $35,000.
The Tribune in an editorial on the Behring sea to-morrow will say that Congress has acted wisely in calling for correspondence on the controversy. There is evidence," says the editorial, that Lord Salisbury is advancing some of the most absurd contentions, and there
is some reason to believe that a certain quality of menace is imparted to his later tones. Some curious military and naval operations have been going on lately about our coast. Great Britain has been strengthening her splendid defences at Halifax, increasing her military and naval. forces there, adding to her fleet at the Bermudas and Bahamas and sending considerable of a squadron to the Behring sen.
If abe desires this display to be Interpreted by the United States as menace she is engaged In a foolish and regretable business. It is not agreeable to a spirited people to feel that an effort is being made to awe them into submission by a display of engines of force. We can imagine no proceeding on England's part more likely to convince the American people that the Behring sea is mare claurum than the presence of British gunboats in the neighborhood of our Pribzloff islands. We can fancy no demonstration more admirably calcalated to unite this country in a- resolute determination in its extreme demand than the sight of British cruisers hovering around our Atlantic coast. It is desirable that Great Britain should appreciate this point. Americans cannot suppose that this unusual congress of war ships is an expression of genuine British friendship, but whatever it means it serves no good purpose, and the British Government will do itself a favor by ordering its cruisers away."
Private advices from Rio Janeiro say that it is generally and openly stated there that the Rothschilds will not pay the loan made just before the fall of the monarchy. They allega there is as Government de jure, only de facto, and that in case of the restoration or any other change contracts may be repudiated. Ruy Bar. bosa, Secretary of the Treasury, is in a bad fix. The new Government has created new depart. ments and raised the salaries of everybody, the public employes of the army and navy and their own, which this county could not afford under the monarchy much less than now. The foreign interest has to be paid, exchange is very high,

Emperor William has granted permission to Von Hobo Pasha to remain in the service of the Sultan for two years longer. He is Grand Equerry of the Sultan, having charge of his person whenever he goes without the Yaldiz Palace. This retaining of foreign officers in the personnel of the highest staff of the Sultan is in accordance with the long-established usage of Ottoman rulers, because they feel greater security when guarded by foreign Christians who are not mixed up with the intrigues of the court like native Mohammedan statesmen and officers, anil, therefore, are never likely suddenly either to
