early and guard their premises, as a strike of the members of the force is certain to begin to-night. The centre of the agitation is at Bow Street, where many of the men were suspended yester day evening for refusing to go on duty.

Forty constables, who took part in Saturday's strike, have been dismissed from the Force.

In the House of Commons this evening, Mr. Matthews, replying to a question, said that only young constables were concerned in the present agitation, and that the conduct of the elder mem- bers of the force was excellent. He assured the House that there would be no interuption in the police service of London.

...July 8th,

An immense crowd collected at Bow Street last evening, attracted there by the promised police strike. A large body of mounted police paraded the street, but failed to clear away the mob, many of whom were arrested for inciting

disturbances.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, JULY 28, 1890.

The Postmen's Union in London announces a general strike until the ri ht of meeting and free combination are recogniard..

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, in reply to a question in the House of Commons t is even- ing, said that an important point had been raised by the Government of India, regarding the reduction of postage between India and Great Britain, and it was therefore impossible to say when the negotiations would be concluded and the reduction commence.

BOMBAY, July 11th,

The Special Commission, appointed to enquire into the Nizam's escort incident, reassembled to-day. The remarks of Lieutenant Gallie's counsel impugned the impartiality of the Com- missioners. He and his comrades were convinced that the weight of the evidence was against their view of the case, and therefore they no longer wished to appear to prosecute. Their refusal to attend is also explained by the necessity of A basin was thrown from the windows of Bow ascertaining the pleasure of the General Com. Street Station amongst the mounted police. Only a handful of constables refused duty, and their places have been filled by reserves from other Divisions.

The strike is altogether a 'failure. At rald- night torrents of rain fell and thinned the crowd in the streets, and quietness was restored,

The inquiry into the alleged attack on British officers at Hyderabad still continues.

The Commissioner of City Police stated that he knew nothing personally of the occurrence. His Superintendent had made enquiries from the Custom House men and lamplighters, and sent him Panchuama. He communicated orally the result of his enquiries to the Minister,

Faridoonjee Jamshedjee, Private Secretary to the Minister, stated that, under the Minister's instructions, he wrote to Lieutenant Gallie on the 18th of June, régretting the occurrence, and hoping the officers were not hurt, and said that. he had been directed to do so on the morning of the 16th. The agitation among the London postmen is increasing.

Forty Unionists to-day forcibly ejected seventy non-Unionists from the Mount Pleasant Parcels Office; and three hundred post- men at Saint Martin's le Grand struck work, but afterwards resumed their duties..

The Yorkshire, and not the East Yorkshire Regiment, was ordered to London, and arrived at midnight last night, and marched at once to barracks.

Frequent conflicts took place between the mob and the police at Bow Street last evening, in which many were injured. The mob afterwards moved from Bow Street westwards, the police following them. Much damage was done to shop windows in the neighbourhood through which the roughs parsed.

We should like to say now that we cannot understand why our remark of last Saturday was misunderstood to mean that we expressed any views as to the value of evidence tendered by the witness. We gave no opinion as to whether the Court believed the witness or not, and our remark, as we men- tioned at the time, was only intended to save time. Mr. Inverarity then addressed the Court, contending that the whole incident was accidental, and called evidence to support that contention.
