The claims of Great Britain to Ngamiland, an extensive tract of country surat Cape Colony. rounding Victoria Nyanza, and the Stevenson rond, are also recognised, including the territory extending west and south-west to the boundary of the Congo Free State. The district of Vitu, north of the River Tana, has been ceded by Germany to Great Britain, whose protection over Zanzibar will be recognised,

The German sphere of influence has been The P. M. S. S. Co.'s steamer City of Peking, allowed to extend to the Upper Zambezi, and Capt. J. M, Cavarly, arrived from San Francisco, her territory is advanced south-west of the Victoria Nyanza to the Congo Free State, Avid. Honolulu and Japan, this morning. The free trade route between the Victoria Nyanza and following telegrams are taken from exchanges:- Lake Tanganyika has, however, been reserved to England, and for this concession Germany will, if possible, be compensated elsewhere.
England cedes Heligoland to Germany, and Germany receives free transit to Nyassa and Congo. Germany surrenders the coast line from Wittu to Juba, leaving England without a competitor, except Italy, to the borders of Egypt. Sixty thousand miners at Barnsley, in York- shire, have adopted the Eight Hours Bull.
It is reported at Caire that the Mahdi has released the European prisoners in his power.
Further particulars regarding the disastrous explosion in a colliery at Dunbar, in Pennsylvania, show that of the go miners who were entombed 34 were suffocated.
It is reported that the Czar's Palace at Gate china has been found to be undermined by Nihilists. A large number of persons were arrested in connection with the plot.

The English and German Preis generally applaud the settlement. The Emperor William also approves of it, and Germany is delighted at the cession of Heligoland.
The action brought by Miss Wiedemann, a German governess, against Mr. R. H. Walpole, heir to the earldom of Orford, for alleged seduc- tion and breach of promise of marriage, lasted four days. Damages were laid at £10,000.
The counsel for the plaintiff threw up their briels and retired from the case previously to its coming into court on the present occasion, and
Miss Wiedemann-conducted her own case.
The defendant's contention was that the plain. tiff was an adventuress. He sought to establish this view by evidence, but a detective employed by him to collect evidence against the plaintiff gave testimony in her favour, supporting her
case.
The jury were unable to agree upon a verdict. Mr. Hyndman, the Socialist, and Mr. Brad- laugh will debate the question of the expediency of the eight-hours principle, Mr Hyndman affirming and Mr. Bradlaugh denying.
Mr. John Burns, who was to have taken part in the debate for the eight-hours principle, having backed out, Mr. Hyndman takes his place.
Truth, in an article dealing with the mutiny on board H.M.S. Egeria, and the proceedings of the naval court-martial at Sydney, declares that the conduct of an officer provoked the men's outbreak. It denounces the sentences imposed by the court-martial on the prisoners.
Mr. Ernest Benzon, having been released from Imprisonment at Nice, has attended an examination in bankruptcy in London. His liabilities are set down at the sum of £38,000, and his assets £13,000,
The Government of the Argentine Republic has cancelled 30,000,000 dollar notes which were discovered to have been illegally issued.
The match between the Australian Eleven and the South of England, on the Kennington Oral, Was concluded to-day. The home team, who, in their second Innings, had scored 113 for the loss of eight wickets, completed their innings for total of 111. Grace scored a lucky as, Radcliffe 12, Quaife 15, Cranston 14, and Maurice Read 15. Ferris took three wickets for 65, and Turner seven wickets for 50, The Australians, in their second innings, had to bat upon a drying and very difficult wicket. They only reached a total of

ST. PETERSBURO, June 8th. Advices from Siberia state that there have been revolts in gold mines belonging to the the miners in which were gonded to rebellion by starvation wages and maltreatment. They killed two superintendents and demolished a large number of buildings. The troops, composed of Cossacks, were beaten off, and other regiments have been ordered to the scene..

LONDON, June 8th.
The Anchor line steamer City of Rome arrived at Queenstown this morning, The vessel had a narrow escape from destruction at Fastnet. She made out the land in a dense fog at 4 o'clock in the morning. She was going slowly and taking soundings, when, notwithstanding the care exercised, she struck Fastnet rock, about three miles seaward off Crook Haven, bow on. Her forefoot got on the rock and but for the prompt reversing of the engines a great fatality would have been recorded."
The passengers say that the steamer trembled all over when she struck the rock. For a time there was intense alarm on board, the density of the fog, addin to the ominous character of the situation. The passengers were finally quieted by repeated assurances of the commander and other officers.
The full extent of the damage will not be
ascertained until the vessel is dorked. Her stem is broken at the peak, and she shipped large volumes of water forward. The sleamer started for Liverpool at 11 o'clock, at half speed.

Seven shocks of earthquake have occurred in the department of Jura, France, inflicting great damage in the vicinity of the Jura mountains. The people are panic-stricken, and since the first shocks have refused to enter their houses. Thousands are camped in the fields. No loss of life has yet been reported, but a large amount. of property has been destroyed.

H. E. Nich, the Shanghai Taotai, leaves this morning (July 8th) for Peking for audience, and yesterday afternoon the city troops were drawn up at Kinleyuen as a guard of honour, evidently determined to be in good time to salute His Excellency when he went on board last night.
Severni steamers running between Shanghai and Tientsin have recently sighted whales, apparently asleep on the water. One steamer on two occasions passed a dead whale; on each cccasion there were immense numbers of birds on the cetacean, which they were dvouring.
The census recently taken shows that there has not been any great increase in the foreign population of Shanghai since 1885. There has been a decrease in the number of adult males, but an increase in the number of adult females and of children,
The steamship Ningho was run aground opposite Gough Island this morning (July 9th). The vessel, was on her way up the river and on passing the island, Captain Köhler noticed a junk anchored right in his course, leaving him no option but to sink her or run ashore, which he did in the mud on the left-hand side, coming up, just where a small creek joins the river. It is expected that the Ningho will be floated easily at high water-Mercury.

rst July, 1990. The Emperor has made his annual visit to the Temple of Earth on the summer solstice. The day proved to be the hottest of the year, thus far. Prayers for rain have been offered with extra- ordinary diligence this year, in view of the long- continued draught, not only by the Emperor but by many of his officers despatched to many different temples. The number of officials. returning to their posts in provinces, or going for the first time, is unusually large and the Emperor has nearly or quite surpassed the record of his Pedecessors in the number of his personal inter views in one day.
