The tiger charged the tree, when Legh fired two more shots into its Lace. The first shot struck it in the eyes, and after the second shot the tiger made another rush at the tree, which gave way, Legh falling to the ground. As he rose to his feet he was promptly knocked down by a blow on his head from the tiger's paw. His rifle was smashed in the fall, and he was consequently quite helpless. He managed, however, to pick himself up and get out of harm's way before the tiger recovered himself. Beyond a scratch on his eyebrow, Captain Legh was not hurt, and the tiger was subsequently killed by the party,

rumour that Russia has resolved to draw closer to Germany.

The Prince of Wales his accepted an invita tion from Sir Edward Grinnets te visit Dublin privately:

The Ruslan journals express great irritation at the German Emperor's speech at Konigsberg. The Nova Vremya says: "If we were not aware of how often the post-prandial speeches of political orators overstep the bounds of what they mean to say, we should consider the Konigsberg declaration a direct unprovoked threat addressed to Russia." The Austrian papers regard the speech as entirely disposing of the story of approchment between Germany and Russia.

It is rumoured that the Directors of the British East Africa Company have given Lord Salisbury to understand that unless the Germans are restrained from monopolising all the trade routes. into East Africa and cutting away the ground from the Company's feet, the Company, will decline to struggle any longer with the difficulties in which it is thus involved.

Prince Bismarck has been giving out his views on the relations between Russia and Germany to the Nevor remya's correspondent. He said Germany needed the Austrian alliance for the same reason that Russia needed France. He then added: "I have always been against a war with Russia. It would be a crime for Ger- many to extend her frontiers beyond Memel, for, the Baltic Provinces without Poland would be of no value, while the annexation of Poland with nine million Catholic Poles would raise the oumber of Catbolics in Germany to half the population. War with Russin is impossible."

An impression is beginning to prevail that Mr. Stanley's denunciations of the English Government for not doing more to secure British interests in Africa is exaggerated. Lord Salisbury is by means supposed to surrender, bat negaliations are still proceeding. On the ether hand it seems only too probable that had the public taken a more intelligent interest in African questions at an earlier stage, the British Government might have been induced, if not compelled, to assert British rights and interests when they could have been much more easily In Russia the Russian press is drawing atten- tion to affairs in Persia. Prince Bismarck, referring to the Labour Con- ference at Berlin, said: "It was nothing more than a sword stroke in the water. The discontent of the working man was a sort of faver; the dissatisfaction of the capitalist was worse and HARDRAMATIC AND BURLESQUE more serious to the State. The majority of the working men was not terrible. All the French revolutions were produced not by majorities but by minorities. If the millionaries were not satisfied, how could they satisfy the working man when God had not implanted in him the faculty of contentment."
