there is a clear spring, which is regarded by the Chinese as very sacred. During the early part of this spring the weather was rather hot, and u was noticed by people who lived near by, that a certain light, or rather streaks of light, were emitted from the well. The people murvelled at the eccurence, and all sorts of stories were afinat regarding it. Strangest of all was one tha while the weather was quite hot, it began to rain hailstones which did some damage to the corps in the surrounding district, and all the small creeks began to swell up, sine over flowing their banks, and caused some of the temple walls to fall down, and the people were Now the people all agree greatly frightened. that there must have been a diagon in the spring which was at the foot of the pagoda, and that he must have tise and caused the atmospheric disturbance.

After staying there for a coupic of days, they went out and bought a quantity of crude opium, which they eat, and then returned to the house, and ordered dinner, While they were eating, the drug began to operate, and the men got sick. The inmates of the house at once suspected what the case was, and put the men into jurickshas, telling the coolies to drive off to hotel. The hotel-keeper would not receive the unconscious men, and sent them away again. They were stopped by a French policeman, who sent them to a police station in the English Concession. The sergeant on duty sent them to the Shantung Road Hospital, but before they gt there, one of them died. The other is in a precarious, condition, and is not expected to recover. An inquest was held by the district, magistrate on the suicide the following day.

NOTES FROM CHINESE PAPERS.
The following is rather stiff to swallow, but nevertheless, minus a little exaggeration it may be accepted as truth. At Kacchow in the Chekiang province it has been showering huge hailstones from time to time during the last month. The hailstones are of an unprecedented size, some of them being an large as the top of a Chinese table. Houses, animals, and crops have been destroyed by this visitation, and the suffering caused to the people of the district has been so widespread, that the Provincial Treasurer has sent weiyuen to inspect the district, and make a report.

This poor woman had been a cripple for twenty of her best years; years in which she should have had such comfort and enjoyment ns lile has to give. But, on the contrary, she was a miserable burden to herself and a source if care to her friends. Now, at at an age when the rest of us are growing feeble, she, in a manner, senews her youth and almost What a blessing begins a new existence.
NO one who and what a wonder, it is! knows her, or who reads, her story, but will be thankful that the good Lord has enabled men to discover a remedy capable of bringing about a Cure that reminds us-we speak it reverently- of the age of miracles,
The Ningpo Tootal, Woo, has just issued a proclamation forbidding any more native nun- neries at that port, as the present institutions of that kind are anything but what they ought to be The proclamation states that Woo is aware that some of the nuns who enter the so-called convent may do so at first with good and pious intentions, but it has been brought to his notice that many soon became vicious, and novices who enter are corrupted by the others. It is a known fact that during the daytime, many ef nuns may be seen at their devotions. But this is only a blind, for if one passes the same place in the nicht, one will hear ard sr debauchery bing acted in every den convent) "And merry songs floating in the air and the sounds of wine drinking and taughter may be heard on every side." This is an abuse, the proclamation says, of the holy name of religion to a temple for a house of prostitution. Some f the bad nuns in these places frequently go to respectable hauses under cover of disguise for a religious purpose, and entice virtuous maiders to these vile dris and a complish their. ruin

The Villars was here from the 27th April to the 1st May, and left for Hongkong after having saluted the fort. Then came the German gun- boat, fs, Comman der Ascher. After having landed the newly appointed German Consul for Formoss, Dr. Merz, in Taiwanfoo, the fifr came here via Foochow and Tam.ui. The Comman. der, and the first lieutenant, von Levetzon, went from here to call on His Excellency the Governor, the conference having been settled the day before by telegraph. In this connection I cannot help remarking, that the railway authorities had again altered the time table without giving any notice of such intention, and consequently, the naval officers had to wait for over two bouis in Shudinka 'before they could get a train. There is hardly anything else of an interesting nature to tell you just now. The railway engineers are down south, and nothing, or next. to nothing is being done here to the harbour to prepare it for use when the railway is finished but as it appears that nearly all the people here, chronic state of high and low, are in impecuniosity, they will some day find out that there is plenty of profit to be made for a very small aulay of money, if they apply them selves to the task in a sensible and practical way-Shanghal Mercury.
