REPORT OF THE BOAT-HOUSE SUB-COMMITTEE.

The amount expended during the past season on repairs to the boats has been rather heavier than usual.

It was thought advisable before the Regatta (on the principle of a stitch in time saves nine) to send the six fours and four Double Sculling pairs 2 Class over to the Dock Company to have them thoroughly overhauled, repaired and painted, which was most efficiently done, and the thanks of the Club are due to the Dock Company for so kindly undertaking the work and only charging cost price for samme.

Cask,

The Hongkong Jockey Club might, however, imitate with advantage many of the regulations and customs of the Shanghai Race Club, especially in the treatment of visitors and during race days. Every possible courtesy is shown to strangers by the executive of the Shanghai Race Club, as well as by private members; not only are tickets of admission to the Grand Stand provided, but polite invitations to the daily Club liffins are Invariably forwarded, and any information on racing matters is frankly, and freely given. No Valley has become an accomplished fact, and doubt when the New Grand Stand in the Happy that will be at no far distant date, the Hongkong similar courtesies and hospitality, so freely ten dared to Hongkong "sports" at Shanghal andthe Coast Ports. There is one very important privilege whichthe Shanghai Stewards retain,--and which I shall endeavour to introduce here at the next meeting of the Jockey Club-that is with reference to electing visitors as qualified to ride during the meeting. By one of the rules of the Hongkong Jockey Club no person is qualified to ride unless he is a member of the Club ridiculous restriction, in my opinion, which bears very hardly on naval and military officers who may be here only temporarily, and on visitors generally, as before they can be qualified to ride they are mulcted in a heavy entrance fee and a year's subscription. The working Stewards of every meeting, that is the Judge, Clerk of the Scales, Starter, and C. C, should be empowered to concede to any qualified visitor the privilege of riding during the meeting without payment of any fee, and I am convinced that an alteration of the present rule to meet this suggestion would both work well and meet the views of the sporting community generally, besides being highly appreciated by visitors.

The Shanghai Grand Stand, although a vast Happy Valley, is still a long way from being Improvement on the ramshackle structure in the

How good Hero is, nobody outside Mr, Sassoon's stable can have any accurate ideas When he was first trained last year it was currently reported that by collateral private trials he had proved superior to Zephyr, and although this high estimate was generally discredited, it would now appear that it was not far from the truth. Hero, if not the tallest is (with the possible exception of Zephyr) certainly the most powerful China race-pony I have ever tooked over. Besides which, there have been the usual incidental repairs, more especially to the tuba, which appear to have a marvellous knack of damaging themselves, at least we presume so, as although there is a rule to that effect, accidents and mishaps are rarely reported. Of course good deal of the damage done prises from the inexperience of the members using the boats, which are not suitable for beginners. It is not fair to expect those who have never been" in a boat before in their lives, to get into an unstable craft, such as these are, and to at once master the. use of sculls and slide; one has only to watch the futile efforts of some members to get away. from or approach the raft to understand how difficult it must be for them to avoid sampans and other obstacles when out in the harbour. Every one must have a beginning, and accidents arising from this cause must be expected, but we do wishi members would report same so that the damage could be seen to and repaired at once; as by leaving same to be found out the boat is often used several times in the meanwhile and the damage materially increased thereby,

We hope in time to see these tubs entirely done away with, as they are expensive to maintain, being easily damaged, and besides generate a very bad style of rowing. To leam to row a man should be in in a good steady bost with fixed seat and capable of holding someone to coach him; in this way he will learn more in a week than he would in a year going out by himmell in one of the present tubs, in fact now he probably picks up faults which no amount of future coaching will eradicate.

The Class are very badly off for boats. Two Double Sculling Gigs with fixed seats are now being built and will be ready for use in a few weeks, and we hope that next season it may be possible to add some more bosta to this class,
