This is the sort of true Christian who winks at a plot to tempt a husband wrong that his wife may many someone she likes better. He is only to be watched. Yes, bus by whom ? That is, of course, left to subordinates. As a matter of fact, the young man is watched by a young woman, who may, of course, be a private detective, but who looks remarkably like some- thing else. This is the man who would ot dream of charging you more than 5 per cent. for the money he procures for you; but when the costs of looking into your security are deducted, you find you could have got it on much the same terms within a hundred yards of your club. There is the promoted clerk who has got his articles by the simple process of paying. some broken-down drunkard ten shillings a week to keep away from the office where, his dis reputable old name (which by a miracle is still in the Law List) appears on the door. You come in contact with him over a tailor's bill sent to bim for collection, and if you are wise you will pay it at once, even though you have to pay 60 with. You will per cent. for the money to do find it cheaper in the end, for brought up as he' has been to the sharpest kind of practice, be will find no difficulty in squeezing out of you enough to pay the tailor's bill twice over. The smallest concession has to be paid for, and you are lucky if you escape without a bankruptcy petition to conclude the proceedings,
There is another kind, which chiefly infests the West End of the town He is hand and glove with all the money-lenders those, at least, who cannot afford to keep a tame solicitar chained up in a top room in readiness to attest a bill of sale or issue a writ at a moment's notice. He has a cheery, under-bied manner and a large clientèle of actresses both on and off the stage. Champagne and cigars are as plentiful in bis office as bill-stamps, and he is in some respects the best of the whole trike, for he lives a good dexl among his clients, and imitates uncon- sci ualy their tactics and habits. He is quite as hungry as his fellows; but if he makes fifty pounds out of you more than he is entitled to he is very likely to ask you to dinner afterwards, and lose half of it back to you at écarté - especially if you are so fortunate as to possess a title, even of courtesy. He is certainly rather a bon diable than not.
