We respect the religious scruples of Mr. FRANCIS FLEMING, C.M.G.; and we should do so if he were a Mahomedan or a dis- ciple of CONFUCIUS instead of a believer in Pope Leo XII and PETER the Fisherman; but Mr. FLEMING as a private individual is one person and as the representative of British interests in this colony he is quite another. If he is to neglect his duty, and what are clearly, the best interests of Hongkong, on the paltry ground that his religious beliefs interfere with the proper 0.75 carrying out of certain functions for which he is unmistakably responsible, then it is quite, clear that he falls far short of the responsible position he now occuples. If His Excellency subordinates the important duties and responsibilities of his high office to the bigoted absurdities of a washed-out religious imposition narrow-minded Ignorance, he had much better consult his friends, take sound advice --and retire to a nunnery, or somewhere else where politics are a dead letter and public opinion a reminiscence of the days $4.50

MR, MA KIR TCHONG, the popular managing director of the China Merchants 5. N. We under stand that Mr. Ma's mission has been attended with great success. He will probably return to Shanghai' about the end of the present week. We read that twenty supernumerary draughts men, most of them qualified surveyors, have luck work in Melbourne for 200 a year (the Government only offers them 140). Times change. A few years ago, during the land-rushca, there was hardly a certificated surveyor in Australia who, if he chose to work, could not make anything between one and three thousand

LADY Aylesford lately sued a British railway company for so damages for the loss of a Chinese "chow chow "slut given her by Lord Wolverton and intended for a mate to a dog of the same breed. In the witness-box she stated that she already had an order for five puppies at ten guineas each, but she was nonsuited, as no negligence was proved. What's to become of poor Bill Sykes when Countesses go into dog langying?

For months past rumours have been prevalent that a new Customs shed was to be built in place of the ramshackle structure that has done duty for so long. I believe there is some truth in the report, but the final decision on the matter rests. with the Inspector General at Peking, to whom it is said to have been referred.
