men had been rescued. A number of those taken out were severely injured.

奶奶 The rescuing parties are still searching for those remaining in the mine. It is feared that it will be impossible to rescue the miners who are still imprisoned. Forty bodies have been taken from the mine. Fifty miners are still Imprisoned and it is not known whether they are dead or alive,

The cause of the explosion was the flooding 'of the pits adjacent to that in which the explosion occuired, thus forcing the gas into the pit where work was in progress and where it was ignited. The explosion had a tremendous force, being beard a mile away..

The first party of rescue organized, endeavor ed to penetrate the pit through the old workings. They got far enough to be able to see the groups of dead, but they could not reach them and were compelled to retreat by the suffocating volumes of smoke.

Upon the first appearance of a dimination in the volume of smoke the rescuers went down the main shaft. They rescued a large number of miners yet alive, but all were badly burned, and they brought out sixty dead bodies, nearly all so mutilated that recognition is impossible.

The latest estimate of the dead is 150. · Mary Anderson has written a letter to William Black, the famous novelist, who is an intimate friend of the actress, in which she announces that she is engaged to marry Antonio de Navarro, the son of Jose F. de Navarro of New York.

He now intends to ask the Court to allow him to amend bis petition so as to extend the charges back to 18 o. This In a striking change.

In 1786 O'Shea went to Chamberlain on the home rula question, and he has virtually been supported since by that party as a weapon against Parnell. To begin his petition from 1886 has therefore leat an addi- tional suspicion to the very shady business, Since 1886 until the last few months Parnell has been in bad health. The charges are now to date from 1880, O'Shea is to pretend that this intrigue was going on under his nose for six years without his knowledge, and that he only discovered it when he separated himself from Parnell. The whole case is, on the face of it, a rollen one, and, when tried, it will probably turn. out to be another painful surprise to the politi cians who, having failed to ruin Farnell's public reputation, now seek to hit him through his domestic life.
