No words were spoken on the scene, but the quick winted Romans comprehended the meaning of every look and attitude. Eventually these famous pantomimists separated, the one managing a company of comic, and the other of tragic ncters. Their remarkable ability is attested by Plutarch. So popular, indeed, did such per- formances become, that the more famous of the ncters were admitted to the society of the proudest patricians, were smiled upon by princes, were elevated io important dignities, acquired great wealth, and were honoured with statues and triumphs. Eighteen hundred years ago, the people of Imperial Rome were as prone to burn incense under the nose of a skilful buffoon as the communities of modern Europe are at the present day. A pantomimist was held in far higher esteem than a Virgil or an Ovid; and the most extravagant praises were lavished upon the mere ministers to popular amusement. Even Amuch later period than the reign of Au- gusida, we find that erudite philosopher and historian, Cassiedi rus King Theodoric's Se Cretary and Minister of Finance, eulogising the marvellous elequence of a pantomimist in language like the following :-"Zoquacissimo || manux, linguosi digiti, silentium clamosum expositio tacita,"

All the characters in our Christmas panto-. mimes were born upon and are macy of the Italian sell. Harlequin's ancient lineage we have already described. Sannio, from whence the Italian Zanni, and the English Zaay, or clown, was the generic name for a buffoon, and is su descried by Cicero in his treatise Dr Oratore, where he says "For what can be more ridi-

On the Italian stage, the Zinni became a permanent type of character not only in ordinary comedy, but in those for which RACING BOOTS, ... the dramatist merely provided the plot, leaving the actors to improvise the dialogue. In all such cases be ceased to be a pantomimist merely. He was theimpudent, intriguing valet and audacious iar, and occasionily a thief. Goldoni turned hith to excellent Arcount; and so did Moliere, who ng presented him to us in the Depit Amoreur, under the name of Gros-Sené; and in the Etourdi unde that of Mascarille, fourbumi imperator.

Originally, however, the entire interpretation of a poem or a drama devolved upon a single actor, who was called upon to portray every charactes introduced, and to differentiate each from all others. But as men capable of so doing were extremely rare, the formation of companies and the distribution of parts became a matter of necessity. How thoroughly the pantomimists Pantaloon is a word of illustrious origin, soiled, entered into the spirit of the dumb-show they like that of gentleman, "with all ignoble use," presented we may learn from an incident recorded It is derived from Piantaleone, rignifying one who by Lucian, who tells us that an actor playing planted the standard of St. Mark upon the battle- the part of Ajax was so carried away by the fury

Her characteristics were those of to aid that, by some of the Roman Emperors, the modern soubrette, sancy, mischievous, and the performance of pantomimes was forbidden, pakling, full of coquetry, and endowed with á and the actors were expelled from the city. It was not so much, however, on account of the lewdness in which they occasionally indulged as because they were enabled by a wink, or a ges lure. or by some clever piece of mimicry, to bring into ridicule the rulers of the people.

We may for some idea of the great number of pantomimis 9 employed in the amusement af the Roman people from the fact that when the Emperor Constans, dreading the approach of a famine, banished from the capital every person engaged in the cultivation of the liberal arts NS useless citizens, he retained the pantomimists; and these are represented to have been 6,000

strong.

է

A distinction requires to be drawn between the pantomimi, ar pantomimists, and the mimi or mimes. The latter resembled the court fools and domestic jsters of the middle ages, and one of their strange functions was to "put an antic dis position on at the funerals of important person- ages, whom they were allowed to mimic. This was the office of the Archimimus, whem Suetonius describes as attending the obsequies of the Em. peror Vespasinn, le performed his part admit ably," we are told, "not only representing, the verson, but imbuting, according in custom, the manners and language of the Emperor when liv- ing. He contrived a happy stroke at the prevalling faible of Vespasian when he inquired the cost of all his funeral pomp-Ten millions of testerces! On this he observed that if they would but give him a hundred thousand they might throw his body into the Tiber."

Theodoric, King of the Ostrogoths, sent a Jemarkably clever mime as a peculiarly acceptable present to King Clovis; and these performers were so popular in the middle ages that Agobard Archbishop of Lyons, who flourished in the ninth century, mentions it as a deplorable fact that numbers of persons professing to be Christians spent a great dent more money upon mimes than they bestowed upon the relief of the necessi-

lous poor.

Our interest in the old classical mimus consists in this, that he was the direct ancestor of the modern Harlequin. His head was shaven, his face was blackened, his flat feet were unshod, and he wore a patched suit of many colours. This consisted of a loose tunic, and imusers resemb ling that of the French Pierrot. Nor was it until the last year of the last century that the present harlequin costume was introduced by James Byrne, the ballet-master of Drury-lane Theatre, who played the character in the pantomime of Harlequin Amulet, or the Magic of Mona," which ran from Christmas, 1799, to Easter, 180, He wore for the first time "a" white silk shape, fitting without a wrinkle, into which the variega ted silk patches were woven, the whole being profusely covered with spangles presenting very sparkling appearance,

He was also the

first to renounce the conventional attitudes, five in number, to which all barlequins had been pre- viously restricted when posturing on the stage Byrne, we may add, died so recently as 1845, at the advanced age of 9 years.

But all of them had ceased to be pantomimists in the original sense of the word. Sometimes they invented their dialogue, and sometimes charm- ing compositions, like those <f Florian, were written for them; compositions in which senti ment, morality, and passion were introduced.
