THE STRAITS v. Hongkong,

The single match at lawn tenais between the champions of the Straits Settlements and Hong. kong was played on the Government House court this afternoon in the presește, of several hundreds of spectators, of whom the fair sex formed a large proportion. Mr. R. W. Braddell, of Oxford University renown, did battle for the southern colony, and Mr. E. J. Coxon repre sented Hongkong. The court was in splendid order and the weather all that could be devised, As in the double-handed match, the conditions were the best three sets out of five, and six games each set. Not. withstanding Bratdell's great reputation Coxon was a decided favorite, but after the easy victory of the local played in the double, offers to lay six to four on the left-hander were allowed to pass unheeded.

Braddell opened the ball by searing a "love" game, and then Coxon electrified the supporters of the Singapore" crack by scoring the next six in succession, and without ever giving his opponent the shadow of a chance, In the second, third, alth and seventh it was game-15, the fourth and six'h were love games, and the first set was credited to Hongkong by six

games to one.

Play was resumed this forenoon on'a greatly Improved wicket, but the ground was very slow, and the ball would not travel. The Services' in- nings was continued by Garde and Walterand the former increased his overnight score to 12, when a good ball from Fox sent him back to the Pavi- lion, and the same trundler quickly disposed of Walter, the lonings closing for 81. For bowled with noteworthy success, taking 7 wickets for 18 runs. Birch had one for 32, Latchford one for 8, and Hornby one for 11.

The Directors after consultation with the Shareholders approved a scheme for laying out the Company's property, and they have now the. pleasure of, informing the Shareholders that a contract for building 16 houses has been entered into, six of which will be ready in twelve months, another six in eighteen months, and the remain der in 22 months and it is hoped that they will yield a satisfactory return.
