5 o'clock.

A much better feeling has prevalled to-day, and public confidence is being gradually restored. Punjoms "boomed" at an early hour this forenoon and from 19 were rapidly rushed up to as high as 24 for cash; later on they weakened some what and sales were reported at 22, but when our report left 23 was the current quotation, and there were very few shares

private telegrams of a favorable natnre" had come to hand and that the "boom" was the natural outcome of the good news but at present we have very little faith In telegrams, either public or private, as there would appear to be little doubt that the 'oracle' has been worked lately in "connection with the Punjom Company by one or two Interested speculatora In a fashion that is not usually recognised as legitimate, not to use a much harsher term. If our investigations into this mystery-we are. now specially referring to the San Francisco telegrams, are successful, we shall have a very nice little story to tell our renders by and bye. Banks continue In good demand; shares have been and placed to-day at 200 for cash also at 210 for March. The reasons for the recent rise in Bank shares wo propose dealing with editorially at on early date. China Traders were inquired after this forenoon, but no actual transac

China tions came under our notice: Fires are also in better demand, with Aupar buyers at as high as 9o. A report was "time" going the rounds that some business had been done in Steamboats, but we failed to obtain reliable particulars, There has béon a sudden demand for the shares of the China and Manila Steamship Co.,,and the quotation jumped from 100 to 120. What amount of business has been put through we cannot say, but Inquiries for shares were general through. out the day. The Rope Co.'s scrip is likewise in better odour, with buyers at as high as 108. Land Investments have been placed at as high as 10%, but probably a few additional shares could be procured at that rate. Other quotations speak for themselves.
