A MONTREAL correspondent writes :-Fired no doubt by the case with which the Revolution 2.00 has been carried out in Brazil, quite a number of French pipers, including the Patris, the Lecteur Canadien, and the Eviniment, now declare in favour of a Canadian Republic. The Herald in this city, the chief organ of the Dominion Opposition, says that the English 0.75 people are slow to make constitutional changes, but adds that it is unsafe to say what the force of example and increasing intercourse between Great Britals and America might not do. THE Chinkiang Correspondent of the Shanghai Mercury writes under date December 19th- The foundation-stone of the new Bitish Con- sulate was laid to-day, and the ceremony was witnessed by nearly the whole of the foreign community. The Acting British Consul, having received the trowel and hammer from the Superintendent of H.B.M. Board of Works, pro- ceeded with a few remarks appropriate for the occasion, and then deposited in the cavity several coins of the realm, the Shanghai Mer cry and other local newspapers; also a docu- ment on which are recorded the names of the British subjects and other nationals who attend ed the ceremony. The stone was then lowered into the cavity and was declared to be wall and truly laid. Three chears, and a "tiger," were given for the British flag, which brought to a close this very interesting ceremony. guests were photographed by an amateur artist.

The autumn race meeting at Hankow was originally fixed for November 14th and 15th, but | having been postpined on account of the floods, took place on Thursday and Friday, the 12th and 13th inst., and passed off very successfully. On the Wednesday there was heavy rain and strong wind, and though on the first of the two days the sun shone, there was strong wind which was not altogether pleasant for the spectators. On the Friday the weather was again fine and much warmer. Thanks to the energy of Mr. Price, the course was in very fair condition, bat nevertheless plates had to be used on account of the slippery nature of the ground. The strange- ments were all that could ba desired, except perhaps that it would be an improvement if the Chinese were not allowed in those parts of the ground where the pontes walk. The racing was chiefly noteworthy for the saccess which attended the big stable, Mr. Nicholas winning no less than ten out of fourteen races. "In the
