Mr. Mandl is understood to have taken a Christmas box to Mr. Krupp, in the shape of a contract for guns for the defence of Talien-hwan and Wel-hai-yei, amounting to over one million taels.

It is strange, but true, that our legal humour should never have found its historian. There is a wealth of anecdote through legal biography collect together the gems which thus lie buried. although no one has ever taken the pains to fut, perhaps, the best stories have been handed down by tradition, and many have never been told at all, except by word of mouth. Nothing illustrates the paucity of modern legal witticisms more forcibly than the way in which hoary Joe is almost impossible to trace them back to their beginning. There is for instance, scarcely a barrister of diminutive stature who has not, as the story goes, been requested by same judge or other to stand up when addressing the Court," and has indignantly replied, "I am standing up, my lord."
