King Francis the Fust found more favor, being elected unanimously, and a motion was carried that he should be ordered to return from his kingdom at once to take up the position. Dr. Cantlie was as heartily elected to the vice- president's chair, which left the office of secretary vacant. The unhappy Collins was put into the place immediately, and then, Dr. Chalmers, Mr. Robertson, Mr. Mitchell, and another, with the President and vice-President. were clected. Committee. A proposition was made that the Society should try to get the use of the City Hall Library as a reading-room and meeting-place, but nothing was done, as the project did not seem to be viewed with enthusiasm.

A very hearty vote of thanks to Dr. Cantlie for all he had done for the Society was modestly responded to, and the proceedings closed.

SUCH a thing as a Chinamari bestowing bis burglarious intentions on a bank, says the Straits Times, is almost unprecedented in this colony, but such a thing did occur last night, (arst) when a Chinaman was caught in the very act of at- tempting to effect an entrance into the Hong kong and Shanghai Bank. THE POLO CLUB'S GFMKHANA.

The second "Gymkhana" held under the auspices of the Hongkong Polo Club was brought to a successful insue yesterday afternoon on the Race-course, the use of which had been kindly granted by the Stewards of the Jockey Club. The weather was all that could be desired, and as usual in this colony when anything in the way of racing is on the tapis, there was a very large attendance of spectators, including His Excellency Governor des Voeux and many ladies. By the courtesy of Colonel Chater and the Officers of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the Band and Pipers of that Regiment were in attendance, and dur- ing the afternoon performed the following

In the midst of all the attention which has lately been directed to Land Companies' Shares, it is a little surprising, writes a financial journal, that those of the Pabang Corporation have not at- tracted more business. This may be dues perhaps, to the disappointment which was felt early in the year at the delays in the crushing of the tin, but that is a matter which time has mended, and we understand that now a very different condition of affairs prevails, The fabulous wealth of Pabang rivals that of South Africa, and we expect to hear a good deal more about Pabung and the progress which it is [5 making before long. Discoveries in connection with gold, always known to exist in large quantiles, but now being specially tested, are daily reported, showing that, although the tin lodes are admitted to be the richest in the world, Strathapey Pahang is not dependent upon that metal alone. The gold lands of Pahang are certain to become a great feature in the production of the 'most precious metal.
