Eighty-five years ago the city of New Orleans saw some of its palmiest days. The people had not vet begun to realise that Napoleon's monetary requirements bad resulted in their being sold, with all their belongings, into the United States, and there was little there that was American. Dueling was considered just the thing, as it was in France. Gambling was freely carried on and were backed by heavy capital, and money the doors were thrown wide open.
