As a result, we understand two of the largest and wealthiest companies running out of London have decided to adopt some of the instruments as an experi- ment. have Some enthusiastic Scotchmen here' suggested that steps should be taken to celebrate St. Andrew's day, the 30th November, by a public dinner, as is usual in other places in the Far East. There are a great many Scotchmen in Bangkok now, and we have no doubt it only requires some one to take the initiative in order to make the proposed dinner a great success. We shall be glad to receive any communications on the subject.

We regret to hear of the death of Mr. F. Masius, of Messrs. Markwald & Co, which took place at Frankfort-on-Main on the 6th instant. Mr. Masius had been many years in Bangkok and was greatly esteemed and respected. He held the office of Austro-Hungarian Consul for

During the meeting of the British Association at Newcastle, Professor Milne, of the Imperial University of Tokio, whose name is already well known to our readers, read a paperwhich attracted so much attention that it was by special request read in three different sections discussions and applause in each, and was especially fortunate in securing the warm support and approval of Sir William Thomson, one of the Nestors of science. In the paper in question Professor Milno describes an instru ment which was invented and perfected by himself and Mr. Macdonald, of the Japan Rail- way Department, for recording graphically all the movements, of whatever character; of a train while in motion. It works onthe same principle as a sisemograph, although, It could not be used to record earthquakes any more than the sisemograph could be used to record the vibrations of a train. Its main feature is that there are points which record relatively the vertical and horizontal movements of the train. No part swings on its own account like a pendulum, but the pointers or recorders pulsate with the motion of the train. These pointers, of which there are three, record the vertical, the horizantal, and what may be called the fore and
