THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1889.
COREAN NOTES.
Mr. Bjerre, Inte electrician at the Palace at Seoul, lek Chmulpo on the 1st instant. The electric light at Seoul is at a standstill, and candies are used, as of old, within the precincts of the Palace,
The agricultural prospects in Corea are very bright; and from the present outlook very larg crops will be gathered all over Corea this year.
Several foreign employes of the Corean Gov. ernment have been discharged lately, and it is probable that several more wil follow shortly It is rumoured that Major Les and Colonel Cum mins, of the Corean Army, have been notified that their services are no longer required.
Six guas (40 pounders), gun carriages, and ammunition arrived at Chemulpo on the 3rd inst from Germany for the Corean Government. They came via Hongkong, where they were transhipped into the Corean steamship Signal What use they will be to Corea is a problematic. speculation which time only can solve.
I beard on the 4th inst from a Corean that, Prince Nin Yong Ik and seven companions are going through a course of military training i Hongkong under a British drill sergeant. They were seen drilling just before the Signal left port--Chinist Times Corespondent.
and one must feel inexpressibly sad an these facts come to light. One man said: "Our people do not know the doctrine of feaus, and do not see that such things are very wicked, and being poor, they are unwilling to do the best they can for their families and trust they Lord to help them care for the children He send." Child selling is also pre valent, and it is very sad to see parents enger to sell their children for a good price, and to hear mothers says, "We do not care to keep our children, they are too much trouble." I was attending a sick man in a village, and one day noticed that the baby was not in its accustomed place."Where is your boy?" I asked. "I sold him to a shopkeeper in the village and got 2.8c
A little boy, of eight years, cash for him." standing by, turned to his father and said: "Why, I thought you get 300 cash for bias," and the matter seemed of no importance, beyond the price received, to either of them. Wife-selling also prevails, but it is not very common; the parents are able to exercise a wholesome check in this matter, for in case of mistreatment they may accuse the husband before the magistrate and make him my dearly for his folly. Two cases have recently occurred in Tai Ku which illustrate this. In these cases the second wife took opium to spite her husband and, died, and the husband, being accused before the magistrate by the parents, was fined 80,000 cash, a heavy sum for labouring men. I was called to attend a case in which the second wife sought to end her life with opium, and was only prevented doing so by my timely arrival. Very soon thereafter the man called for the parent of his wife, and arranged with them to take the girl back home, which they did for a slight con- sideration. The wife may be mistreated, but she has the means of revenge at hand, for oplum is found in almost every house and all-During the late war a matter of some $100,000 know how to use it. A vast majority of the opium cases are women. It is the custom in China for the bride-groom to pay a certain amount of money for his wife, but it is not always true, I suppose, that the amount given determines the esteem in which the wife is held. One rather bright and pretty woman came to visit us one day, and as she went out the gatekeeper said: "That is a silver woman. She cost Tis. 150, The husband being a comparatively poor man, was certainly proud of his rather costly wife. It would be interesting to know whether this fact contributed to domestic felicity.-The Chinese Times,
BRITISH NORTH BORNEO.
SANDAKAN, October 1st, 1889, The pig nuisance promises to be on us again. Large droves are crossing the Kinbatangan and at the Beatrice estate the Sulu gardeners and other people have already killed several.
We are glad to bear that the Estimate of $400,000 on account of Land Sales has already been exceeded by $4.708. The amount received in August was $61.912 and the total to date. (31st August) $204.70R,
Crocodiles are evidently hungry in Padas Damit. A girl was seized while bathing last week; but was rescued by two men diving after the animal, which was promptly captured. A pony was also bodily taken away and eaten.
Several batches of Sala ponies have arrived in Sandakan Jately, for the most part very fair specimens of horse flesh. They have been engerly bought up, with the result that pedes trians are becoming uncommon, nearly every traveller being mounted to take the morning and evening air.
The two Chinese, Lack Ab Tow and Wong Guain, sentenced to death for murder of some Danuts on the West Coast, were executed within the precincts of Sandakan Gaol on Thursday, September 12th. No spectators were allowed and the execution was carried out with out any contretemps.
A gang of convicts are now busy at work improving the hill on the Eastern side of Fort Fryer, which is being levelled and terraced, and the gully at the foot is being filled up behind the gaol palisading. The foundation for the new gaol is nearly completed, the site baving been reclaimed from high water mark...
A large site has been levelled below Mr. Robertson's bungalow whereon quarters for Government' officers are being built. The site is a fine one, commanding a full view of Sanda-
pretty well taken up. The new 'Club has a site in the lower part of the hill as also the new Hotel and Stores Company..

HOIHOW.
(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
October 4th, 1889. Since my last letter the weather has become comparatively cool and sickness has decreased accordingly,
The Chinese are busy building new forts here: the old ones are in a sadly dilapidated erndition,
were granted for defence purposes, which resulted in a sand battery! A French war-vessel was recently observed surveying at Ja-lin-kan in the South Coast; this, beat, has cicated somewhat of an official scare.
A new lighthouse is shortly to be put up at Cape Cami on the mainland.
Another robbery took place here the other night; this time the thieves had the audacity to enter the Magistrate's Yamen.....
Here is a good tiger story. A spotting member of our small community recently appeared upon the scene, exhibiting a skin and bunes as proof of his encounter with that dreaded beast; some, however, doubted; the dog test was brought to bear on the subject, strange to say the fatter animal found tiger bones quite palatable, and attacked them with a wild attem! there are plenty of buffalo's around this country, and' ] have observed a vendor of skins prowling about! I may add, however, that game is plentiful here, Snipe, partridge, deer, antelope and wild pig too far from home I opine for London sportsmen, but I hear that some Hongkongius ire likely to visit us this season. It is rumoured that the Foreign Customs will, shortly open, some new, stations on the island.-Courier.
SOOCHOW
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT)
October 15th, 1*89. This is the twenty-seventh day since the floods commenced and still the water is coming down in torrents. This harvest rain is probably the most fearful calamity that has overtaken the central section of the Middle Kingdom since the Invasion of the T'aipings. In some places the rice, ripe for the sickle, fi" drowned; in other localities "the staff of life" lies moulde, .ng and sprouting in the water, Rice has already risen five cash to the pint. Rents are to be paid and the heavy taxes. The mandarins will be between two opposing forces; on the one side the genuy led by men of higher, rank than the Governor demanding that their tenants shall be forced to pay, and on the other the peasants who by tens of thousands are reduced to beggary. Were rents and taxes brought down one-half there might be a way to escape from the difficult situation, but what knows the Emperor or what- care the literaft? The houses with their brick and dirt floors are wet and muddy and there is much sickness. The spectacle is a sad one.
The mandarins have gone to the principal temples praying for clear weather. When there is a drought, the Buddhists call on the multitude
intimations.

We hear that Ameer Ul Kiram's retirement will not much improve the political aspect in Sulu because as soon as it became known to his adherents, they set about choosing another leader as they declare that they will never submit to either the present Sultan (Haroun) or to the Spanish Government. Things are so bad that no protection can be given to Europeans outside the Spanish cantonment.
Ameer ul Kiram, one of the rival claimants of the Sultanate of Sulu, arrived here in the begin ning of the month. He has resigned his claims In favour of Sultan Haroun, the nomings of the Spanish Government, and will probably settle with his family in Sandakan, He is a small man, aged about thirty, with a somewhat sinister appearance, His costume is both rich and gaudy, being of brilliantly coloured silk, bespangled with gold. He is accompanied by four wives and about forty followers.,
The China-Borneo Company have received a telegram from Messrs. Binger and Herschel of Amsterdam dated September 13th, stating that 371 bales of tobacco from Baron von Stein's Estate in Darvel Bay has been sold at 140 Dutch cents per kilo, which equals about 27. 5 per English lb, or $tos per picul. 56 bales of this lot were damaged, which being taken into con sideration the price realized must be highly satisfactory to all interested. The tobacco was valued at ar. 6d, or one penny more than it realized.
We hear that the defnite reply may soon be expected from the Indian Government in reference to the question of indentured labour for this State.
