THE deserter Claussade, who was sentenced to death last week at Handi for treason, was shot by a half section of marines, at the foot of the gallery in the citadel, at five o'clock on the moming of the 5th inst. He met his death | calmly, but seemed stunned at his sentence being executed so soon after, it was pronounced. MR. and, MRS. J. E. TAYLOR, of the "Razzle Dassie" Company, two versatile artistes of world-wide reputation, arrived here from Yoko hama the other day, and contemplate giving a short series of entertainments in the Theatre Royal, City Hall, prior to proceeding for a tour through India. Telegraphic communication has been restored, and the barometer is rising. The steamers Benlarig, Activa, and Amay reported bad weather from the southward.
MINING PROSPECTS IN HONGKONG,
This is a novel heading for a Hongkong.news paper, but if Mr. J. Grant Smith's expectations are realised it will be more frequently scen in future. One day last July Mr. Smith was wandering pensively in the cavine above the Bowen Rond, to the right of the Tramway, when he saw something in the dry bed of a water-courne dawn which a few weeks before a to rent had been leaping. He examined the something, and found that it was ore containing iron pyrites. He took some specimens home and started reading mineralogy. His researches shewed him that where there
were pyrites there were frequently other minerals, and he went back and prospected with a walking-stick. He found several veins of what proved to
be galens in the strate, running · Exterally across the face of the bill. Galena an are which is full of possibilities and other metals-there may be gold, silver, lead, zinc, or anything else in it, and it frequently ranges as high as $-a ton. Mr. Smith having caught his galena, set out to ascertain staying here temporarily, and he was engaged its value. Mr. S. B. J. Skenchley, of Borneo, is
to report. He examined the locality, and told Mr. Smith that it was genuine galena of the most virulent type, mingled with symptoms of zinc-blend-anore which also contains silver. He also said that it was handy for working by water-power. Mr. Smith sent this report to the Government and obtained mining rights in respect to the ravine, subject to some roysity. He then set a lot of coolies to work exposing the lode, which is about a yard wide, embedded in feldspathic rock, just between the granite and the porphyry. Mr. Sketchley is going to make a thorough examination of the place again, and assays are being made, so that in a few days it will be ascertained whether there are millions in the discovery or not. If it is good a syndicate will probably be floated. We beg to suggest a name if we may, How will "The Rocky Ravine Romance Co." do?

Huc, only to denounce them, affirming them to be “baseless calumny of the higher life of a great portion of the hiïman race." Mr. Meadows is ready enough. to admit that the Chinese are not attracted, either to the bare results of centuries of doctrinal disputes, or to the conduct of the nations which accept those results as their creed, but
Chinese have no longing for immortality, no emphatically denies the assertion that the

It would be easy to discuss it at great length, but we are not certain that any light would be thrown upon it. In our view there' is a practical method of approaching the matter,' which will serve our purpose much better than abstract discussion. Taoism and Buddhism have greatly affected the Chinese, but the
Chinese are not Taoists as such, neither are they Baddhists. They are Confucianists, and what- over may be added to their faith, or whatever may be taken away, by the other systems of thought, the Chinese always remain Con fucianists. We began by remarking that Con fucianism is now well understood, and we shall close by endeavouring to show in what respects it comes short of being a religion such as the Chinese ought to have. In order to do this, we shail quote the language of a a distinguished Chinese scholar, whose conclusions cannot be

the same time it is acknowledged that there is in Confucianism much that is excellent concerning the relations of man, and many points in which the doctrines of Christian revela- tion are almost echoed. We quote the four-and- twenty points specified, adding here and there

present position when first erected, but if so, times have changed, and while the ornamental attributes have long since passed out of sight the obstruction, with the very largely increased population and traffic, has become a public nuisance.
During Mr. J. M. Patck's regime an attempt was made to havethe Clock Tower removed to A more convenient spot and a numerously signed petition was presented to the Governor on the subject. It was understood at the time that His Excellency had personally no objection to the proposed removal, but was influenced by the Surveyor-General to refuse the prayer of the petition for the time being. It was also generally believed that the Surveyor-General's opposition was mainly on account of the agitation having originated with and had been carried out by a certain legal practitioner, who had given the Public Works Department a vast deal of unnecessary trouble and vexation in other matters, and whose sole object in this instance was the purely philanthropic (?) one of improving the value of some property he owned in the immediate vicinity. But however that may be, it is certain that the Surveyor-General did try his hardest to render the Clock Tower a still more offensive eye-sare by constructing a public uriņal on its northern side, right under the windows of the Hongkong -Hotel-and-sturdily-maintained-the-useful-- ness of this objectionable nuisance, even Post Colour, guaranteed to contain 10 per in the face of public opinion, until
peremptory order from the Governor settled the matter effectually. Now, we imaging that the Hon. S. BROWN must be quite free from the influences which prejudiced his predecessor against the removal of the Clock Tower, to a more convenient locality, and as great changes will, chiefly in connection with the Praya Reclamation Scheme, within the next few years be carried out in Pedder's Street, & commencement might at once be' made with a structure that is very much in everybody's way, and which under any circumstances must eventually be trans- ferred elsewhere. If we remember rightly an inmaginary difficulty was raised about finding a suitable position for our time- honoured town clock. There are, however, plenty of places available where it would be far more ornamental and certainly more useful than it is obstructing the traffic in the middle of our most crowded thorough fare. Probably the best site in the city would be the vacant ground in front of the Central Police Station-we mean that space facing Wyndham Street which has been lying fallow since the great fire of ten years ago. The lawn opposite the office of the Captain Superintendent would perhaps suit equally well, and from both these sites the Clock Tower would occupy a WATSON'S PURE OPAQUE TOILET commanding position and be plainly visible

PISTOLS for two and coffee for one is the intest order in Haiphong. On the 3rd October the editor of the Courrier d'Haiphong, M. Cuers de Cogolia, writing about the scandalous way in which Oberg and others sold arms to the rebels, expressed astonishment at the fact that the Resident of Haiduong should be charged with the holding of a commission in the matter. On the roth October further reference was made to the matter, and on the 12th M. Depince, the Resident in question, sent two of his friends to two of M. Cogolin's friends, and they very politely but bloodthirstily settled the terms. The latest issue of the Courrier coutains all the letters that passed, and the next, we expect, will report which of the duellists got the coffee.
