5 o'clock. Shares business is gradually assuming a healthier tone, but it will be some considerable time before the market fairly lock Kettles down. The September settlements hayo been "tided over" in a more or less satisfactory fashion, but it is very difficult to form anything like a reliable Idea of what the ultimate results will be. The Inevitable crash has merely been put off for the time being; its full effects will be experienced later on. Banks have improved their position since the end of the month, shares having changed hands at as high us 185 and 186 per cent, premium for cash, A few Union Insurances were done yester wi Hay at 110, and there are further buyers. Tokio We have to report a bit of a rush on China k Sugars, transactions having been booked for cash at 251 and 252, and likewise at 253 and 254 for delivery on the 31st inst. Punjoms are now in demand at 17, and appear to have a decided upward tendency. China Borneos have boomed up to 52, and the whole of the Borneo Tobacco Com- panies are inquired after, but we are unable to give reliable particulars at present. In other stocks there is nothing requiring special comment.
