TO-DAY.

The Share Market. /

5 o'clock.

The past week has been an eventful one in the history of the local Share Market. notwithstanding that actual business in the shape of buying and selling shares has been as dull as the oft-quoted ditch water. As we predicted weeks ago would be the case, the August, settlements have given an immensity of trouble, and in many instances have proved quite disastrous. A considerable number of amateur operators found Saturday last a regular Waterloo ; "lame-ducks!* have some of these

Kone where the woodbine twineth, whilst others, like Mr. Micawber, are waiting for something to turn up. Many accounts are, we learn, still outstanding. others are in the unsettled position generally ascribed to Mahomet's coffin, and in numerous cases the depressing P/N has had to do duty for the merry Mexican. The crash was inevitable; we hammered at the subject in the columns of this journal for months trying to show that' penniless employés, no matter how greatly favoured temporarily by a few lucky speculations, were bound in the long run to go to the wall whén striving against com. bined experience and influence, backed up. by practically unlimited capital; but all argument was in vain. The sensational "booms" continued and the Rialto was crowded with all sorts and sizes of specula. tors who had made, small fortunes (on paper) in China. Sugars, Luzons, Banks, Steamboats and Punjoms; stocks were rushed upto fictitious prices, "corners" were attempted, and the youthful Jay Goulds were all to come out on top as millionaires. And then the inevitable drop came, the ,"corners" tamely collapsed, the small fortunes on paper faded away, and we have the cheerful 'results of the most foolish

page in the record of share gambling Hongkong has yet known, in wide-spread rain and the thorough demoralisation for the present of the colony's share business.

|

Of course stocks all round during the week have had a downward tendency, but as so very little actual business has been done we do not propose to go into lengthý details. Banks continue fairly firm at annexed quotation, and Steamboats also hold their own; but Docks, Luzons, China Sugars, Land Investments and Punjoms have each and all depreciated considerably. The last named stock has held its own better than was anticipated, and if, as is reported probable, favorable telegrams are received from the London Committee next week, or in fact any, telegrams at ail, there will be another big 'boom. China Sugars are decidedly weak, notwithstanding that several influential buyers are sald to be in the market, while Luzons are quite friendless. Land Invest- ment shares, owing, it is reported, to the collapse of the negotiations with the Hongkong Hotel Co. for the sale of certain land at Kowloon, have dropped to some. thing between 130 and 134, but whether any number of shares could be procured at these rates we are unable to say, Selamas are in good demand at 44, but there are no sellars of this stock at present. Business has been putthrough in Hongkong Marinas at 25 per cent, premium, and there are further buyers. Other quotations must speak for themselves.
