RE the sinne cutter's case at the Police Court, reported in another column, we hear that rather than suffer from the consequences of refusing to accede to the demands of the strikers Mr. Sun hing, one of the largest contractors in this Colony, has agreed to their terms, and they have recommenced work. He says that he cannot afford to stop work, as all his contracts have to be finished by a certain time, failing which the loss he would sustain from the imposition of penalties would far exceed the amount he will have to expend in agreeing to the demands of the stone workers

Not long ago another Arab named Syed Saik, without any provoca- tion, ordered one of his female slaves to be hung in chains, and then had her burnt with a red-hot iron in a manner too atrocious to be described. If any of his slaves offend him, he sells them and so reimburses himself against loss. At the same time, he takes - steps to put a stop to the brutality of-the other slave-drivers. According to the Kuang-pao, H. E. Chang Chih "goes into limbo" to-morrow. In other words he will enter the Examination Halls on the 31st, as president of the Board of Examiners, and will not issue forth until the examinations are concluded, and a lot more new Kajen manufactured. His incarceration is expected to continue a week, during which time not even his own mather, if living, could gain an audience with him. The following written orders, however, have been given by His Excellency, with reference to the receipt of what official despatches may arrive during the Examinations. "Despatches from subordinates in the various departments of the two provinces of Kuangtung and Kuangsi are to be handed over to his aide do camp, (Tsung Chuen), and Private secretary, (Wêu ngan). All Imperial Rescripts in sealed boxes, and yellow cavered despatches, brought by mounted courlers carrying the erders of the Boards at Peking, as well so such documents as bave a feather stuck outside their covers denoting haste and urgency, should immediately, on arrival, be taken to the gates of the Examination Halls, where the bearers of the above-named documents are required to beat the great drum placed there, as a notice of their errand. : The papers are to be delivered over to a Wei yuan, deputed for the purpose."
