village swains. Nimrod junior had a queer Hongkong Observatory, 21st August, 1889: instrument of slaughter named the Hu Chiu, or "Tiger's ball. This weapon is shaped like the ordinary lance but without the spear head, and having a curved, hook near the blunt point, which is in the shape of a ball, hence the name. On this book is stuck a piece of the flesh of a dog, killed for the occasion. Nimrod Junior's wife completed the warlike pleture, armed cap à pie” with hunting knife and glistening lance. Having ascended the hilly pass near the village, the hunters stumbled unexpectedly on the object of their search. The son advanced bravely to the front, and placed the enticing piece of puppy before the jaws of the tiger. The tiger appeared to give a grateful nod for the tid-bit, but the next moment uttered a fearful roar, as he fcht the sharp point of the weapon piercing hit jaws. The old hunter then advanced, whirling his terrible iron club, and as it descended with a dull echoing thud on the back bose of the tiger, every one present thought that it would roll over with a broken back bone. Vain hopel the tiger, a tough old depredator, wrenched the hooked weapon out of his jaws, and with a bound fixed hip claws and tusks in the shoulders of the old huntsman, who used his mighty strength In vain attempts to tear in two the jaws of his opponent. At this juncture, his daughter and daughter-in-law came forward, and while the the latter ran her keen lance into vitals of the tiger, the daughter avenged her father's mortal wounds by giving the tiger its coup de grace on the neck with her sharp two- edged sword. "The old huntsman died the next day. The tiger turned out to be a magnificent animal, and its akin has been presented to the district magistrate of Hua-hsien, who showed. kia appreciation of the deed and gift by a present of a hundred taels ($130.)

HE COULD LEAP THROUGH THE AIR,

My object in writing is two-fold: to express my gratitude for a great benefit, and to tell a short story which cannot fall to interest the feelings of many others. It is all about myself, but I have remarked that when a man tells the honest truth about himself he is all the more likely to be of use to his fellow-creatures. To begin, then, you must know I bad long been more or less subject to attacks of bronchitis, a complaint that you are aware is very common and troublesome in Great Britain in certain seasons of the year. It would not yield to medicine, and as I'also began to have violent racking pains in my limbs and back, I became greatly alarmed. I could neither eat nor sleep. If I had been a feeble, sickly man, I should have thought less strangely of it; but as, on the contrary, I was hearty and robust, I feared some new and terrible thing bad got hold of me, which might make my strength of no avail against it. I say, that was the way I thought.

Presently I could not even le down" for the pata all over my body. I asked my doctor what

Right at this point I had a thought flash across my mind like a streak of mussaine in a cloudy, day, had heard and read a good deal about Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup, and I resolved before consenting to be taken to the hospital, I would try that well-known remedy. On this I gave up the doctor's medicine and began taking the Syrup. Mark the wonderful result had taken but three doses, within twenty- four hours, when I was seized with fit of coughing, and threw up the phlegm and mucus off my chest by the mouthful. The Syrup had loosened and broken it up. Continuing with the Syrup, the racking pain, which I belleve came from the bitter and poison humours in' my blood and joints, soon left ma entirely, and I felt like going to sleep, and I did sleep sound and quiet Then I felt hungry, with a': natural Appétite, and as I ate I soon got strong and well
