The purchaser of the old Seamen's Club has turned the building into Chinese shops, and one of the party walls, dividing the shops came down with a crash, severely injuring three work- men, one of whom had his thigh broken.
The owners of the various conlie-steamers must be making their fortunes. The rates are, from here to Singapore, Sa.40, and from Singapore to Amoy $4.00, including "chaw." How that will pky I can't make out.
We are having seasonable weather now. The fever has nearly all disappeared. The farmers are jubilant as they say that the crops this year are better than they have had for some years.
THE SULLIVAN-KILRAIN FIGHT.
The Victoria (B. C.) Timer gives the following account of the fight between Sullivan and Kilrain -
NEW ORLEANS, July Rib The Sullivan Kilrain fight occurred this morn- ing at Richburg, Miss, by miles distant from New Orleans. Sullivan won in the 75th round, Neither of the combatants was seriously injured, although Kilrain was very weak at the close.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, AUGUST 12, 1889.
punishment. The latter seldom had the best of
'Sullivan was in the better condition. There was no doubt as to the final result from the first. Kilrain looked as if over-trained. He is pretty well used up and greatly dejected over his defeat. He intimates that he was dragged. His condition was the subject of universal and surprised comment from the start. He was sallow and unshaven looked tired and nervous. His chest narrow and his whole physique compared badly with Sullivan's. It is assorted that he weighed 195 and Sullivan 205, but there seemed at least as pounds difference between them.
and WAS
Sullivan's fighting to-day was the most scientific he has ever done. He abandoned his old rushing tactics, husbanded his strength, kept cool, and seemed to recognize and respect the merits of his adversary.
A NEW SWINDLE.
The Crown Prosecutor of the city of Wolver. hampton, Staffordshire, is in a quandary. The police there have in custody a young man who is undoubtedly worthy of severe punishment, and yet bis crime is so entirely novel that he probably will not be punished at all unless the Kilrain won first fall and first blood. Sullivan
old statutes against witchcraft are revived, in got the first knockdown. Time of fight, 2 hours and 18 minutes. The first intimation of the which case he might be comfortably roasted result was brought to New Orleans by a special
before a slow fire. The young man, whose name is Lewis Albert, is a graduate of Oxford Univer- train, which made the run of 105 miles In 3 hours and ten minutes. There was no intersity. Soon after he left college he became ference, and Kilrain was the first to sling his interested in mesmerism, mind-reading. and castor into the ring. He was seconded by hypnotism, and as a result of natural gifts or Charlie Mitchell and Mike Donovan, with John close study, soon became so expert that for a time he travelled about giving exhibitions of his Murphy as bottle holder. Sullivan followed ■ few minutes later, and was loudly cheered. His powers. seconds were Wa. Muldoon and Mike Cleary, with Dan C Murphy, of Boston, as bottles
holder.
Pat Kennick, of New Orleans, was suggested for referee by Kilrain, and John Fitzpatrick, also of New Orleans, by Sullivan. After some slight wrangling, Fitzpatrick was mutually agreed upon
for referee.
|
He acquired a wonderful influence over the will power of certain classes of people, and established such a reputation that he might have made his exhibitions very profitable. but for an unfortunate penchant for the flowing bowl. This brought him so low that three months ago he tumed up in Wolverhampton in rags and without money or friends. Then he began to hypnotize with a vengeance. Small shopkeepers, usually their tills very mysteriously dwindled after a visit from the urbane stranger.
Kilrain won the toss for position and selected the north-east corner, Sullivan taking the south-women, began to discover that the contents of west. Just before time was called Kilrain stepped over to Sullivan and proffered to wager $1000 on the result, which was promptly accepted by Sullivan, and the money placed in Referee Fitzpatrick's Bands.
THE FIGHT.
First round-Time was called, at 10; 10. Kilmin made a vicious pass at Sullivan with his right, landing on the left of the neck. Both clinched and Kilrain gained the fall.
Second round-Sullivan feinted with his left, which Kilrain dodged. A clinch followed, Sullivan throwing Kilrain heavily.
3rd round-Kilrain rushed in and clinched, Sullivan avoiding the clinch and dealing Jake a short arm blow in the neck. Sullivan followed with blows on the neck and ribs. Kilrain struck Sullivan twice below the belt. Cries of a foul, which was not allowed,
4th round-Kilrain led, landing lightly, a clinch followed, Sullivan on top.
5th round-Kilrain began sparring for wind. Sullivan rushed and gained a cross-buttock lock, but Kilrain broke away, John leading and land. ing on the neck. Jake here began Mitchell's tactics retreating all around the ring, Kilrain Landing lightly on Sullivan's neck, Sullivan cross-countering heavily on the head and Kilrain
went down in his corner.
6th round-Short armed fighting was indulged in, Kilmain attacking John's ribs, and gaining
first blood by a blow on the left ear.
7th round-Sullivan appeared bleeding. He landed viciously in Kilrain's face, gaining the
first knock-down.
2th found Kilrain rushed and clinched, try ing to throw John, but failing. Jake's blows lacked strength, and the round ended with John clinching and throwing Jake heavily,
13th round-Sullivan Janded on Kilrain's ribs, the latter playing for the stomach and striking foul blows repeatedly. John returned on the jaw and ribs, Kilenin slipping down to avoid punish. ment. In this round Kilrain badly spiked Sullivan's left foot.
Eighteenth round-Kilrain went down without receiving a blow, and John claimed a foul, but it was not allowed.
Just what his methed of procedure was none could tell, but when they found on comparing notes that their losses invariably followed the visits of the polite Albert, they set the police to watch him. Then some startling discoveries were made. His estom was to enter a shop, make a purchase of some trifle, and put down a copper in payment. Then the hypnotizing or mesmerizing process must have been brought into requisition, for the shopkeeper in every case took up the copper and handed out the change for a sovereign, which the young man promptly pocketed. In only one case while the police were on his track was there a failure to befog his victim in this way. The detective who followed him about was mystified lor a long time, being utterly unable to account for the hallucination which invariably seized Albert's victims and led them to mistake a copper coin. for a gold sovereign, and it was only after discovering his professional record that he began to understand it.
Albert's last victim was a youth of nineteen, the attendant at the box-office of a theatre in Wolverhampton. He stepped up to the window, boldly asked for a shilling ticket, banded the boy a dirty scrap of newspaper, and received as change, without the slightest hesitation on the part of the boy, four sovereigns and nineteen shillings. While walking off with this he was arrested by the officers, who had been shadowing him for two weeks. The boy in the box-office was dumbfounded when bis attention-was-called-
to the scrap of newspaper in his cask-box, and still stoutly insisted that the gentleman handed him as note. He remembers, however, that a peculiar sensation came over him, which he describes as a sort of numbness, when the man fint approached the window of the office,
The legal statue of Albert's offence is very difficult to determine, as it is without a precedent, and good lawyers say there is no law in England to punish him. The case is excilling great interest.
