GREAT EARTHQUAKE IN JAPAN!.
YOKOHAMA, July 29th. There was a terrible earthquake at Kumamoto
this morning, involving great loss of life and property.'
Kumamoto is situated near the mouth of the Kumagawa, which runs into the east side of the Shimabura Ura. It is a town of some 71,000 ifhabitants, and it was in the castle of Kumamoto that Saigo

made his last stand against the Mikado's troops in the Satsuma rebellion. Kumamoto was once the capital of the Higo Princes. It is situated, according to Professor Milne, the seismologist, in the erster of an extinct volcano, which must have been one of the largest in the world, as the crater in 22 miles in diameter. Near by is the volcano Asosan, a very large one though only 4,100 feet high, which is always smoking, though there has been no craption since 1873 The whole region is volcanic. It is to be hoped that the old castle of Kumamoto has been spared. N. C. Daily News.]

THE enquiry into the cases of the Chinese rioters at Bangkok who have been captured has beca concluded and sentence psssed, and confirmed by H. M. the King. Out of the "Ang Yea" society ringleaders, including the woman Ma Law, cight are sentenced to receive 6o lashes each and to be imprisoned with hard labour (or penal servitude) for terms of 7, 5, and 3 years respectively. The general run of the rioters those found with or without arms, and otherwise behaving themselves at and after capture, some are sentenced to one year and the remainder to six months imprisonment with hard labor. The dog- ging part of the sentence was subsequently carried into effect on at 7 o'clock, in public, near the Central Gaol, H. R. H. Prince Narel, the present Lord Mayor, with Phyas Pechapance and Pecha- dab, chief magistrates, and Luang Ramchat, magistrate, and Khoon Phradang, secretary to the Committee of the Local Government, being present. A CONTRACT has been signed between the Governor of the French possessions of Tong King and M. A. Bavier, of Coire, under which the col deposits of Holong, having an area of 15 000 hectares, have been ceded to the latter in perpetuity, M. Bavier undertaking to work the deposits within a given time. It is stated that the mines have already been opened and coal is being, got.
