The Daily Chronicle's Durban correspondent thinks that the reports of the disturbance at Delagoa bay were exaggerated. He says that the general opinion is that Portugal will buy the railway.
The striking tramway employes at Cardiff are rioting. The companies tried to run the cars with new men under police escort, but the strikers blocked the tracks and threw stones at the cars, hitting passengers, police, drivers and horses, and smashing the windows. Several strikers were arrested, The police force was not large enough to cope with the strikeis.

An engagement has taken place at Arqui between a frice of Egyptian troops under the command of Colonel Wedchense and a body of dervishes.
The dervishes were defeated and fled. The loss was soo killed and wounded. Seventy Egyptians were killed and wounded, and twi English officers were wounded.
The dervishes attempted, to effect a lodgment on the river bank. Colonel Wadehente imme diately advanced and attacked them with a field force. The dervishes hade a stubborn resistance. but finally were forced to retire, fighting as they
went.
They were driven northward seven miles. every foot of ground being hotly contested. Two guns belonging to the enemy were captured by
the British. It is expected that further fighting will occur shortly.
Colonel' Wodehouse's troops continued in pursuit of the dervishes and captured too men.

In my allocution I spoke exclusively of one act done against Rome, but there were many others. Statesmen dare even to bring forward accusations from a parliamentary tribune, as though we were able to desire or not to desire what relates to our sacred rights." Fourteen miners were rescued to-day with great difficulty. They were nearly dead. The number of dead is now estimated at 185.
LONDON, July 5th. The first race at Henley to-day was a dis- appointment. It was for the diamond challenge sculls and a good contest was expected, but not seen. Psotta, the American, was in very bad form and the red and black of the New York Athletic Club drooped its diminished head, Nickalls treated Psotti very much as Psotta bad treated his opponents in the last two days, and came in so far ahead that the distance was not worth measuring. Psotta gave up before he was a third over course. He saw that he was beaten and did not exert himself further. Psotta's antagonist was Guy Nickalls. The competitors were early at the start and look up their positions some minutes bef re the time. Psolta was full of confidence as he sat in his shell under the shade of the island trees.

The Rome correspondent of the Times says; Perhaps the public man in Europe who'bliljeves most firmly that a great armed crash is Coming is the Pope. He got private news `n few days ago some says Vienna, 'athers from Warsaw, and still others from secret friends in the Quirinal at Rome, which threw the whale Vatican into an immediate panic. Nobody but the cardinals, who are sworn to secrecy, know exactly what this news was, but, it is practically certain that it was a warning that war is on the way. It is. believed, too, that a hurriedly summoned council discussed a plan of removing the Holy See from Rome, and the indications point to Valencia, ns the place of refuge most favored:... Nothing more definite than this has come to light yet, but developments are likely in come very soon.

NOTES FROM THE CHINESE PAPERS.
The Kwang Pao of yesterday's date states that in consequence of the numerous high handed robberies from excursionials to the Sce Klu fair, which is held about is miles west of Canton once in every thirty years, the Board of Management there, having applied to the Metropolitan Authorities for protection, have received aid in the shape of three armed steamiaunches, under the command of Major Huang, who is attached to the Viceregal troops. Part of a temporary wall put up to enclose the fair grounds, fell down on the 31st ulto, and unfortunately, there being at the time a very large crowd of sightseers, great numbers, were badly injured, but no lives last. It has been computed that an average of 30 os people attended the fair grounds each day.
The prefectural city of Shao Ch'ing near Canton, seems to have been particularly unfortunate as regards doods this year. I was thought that at the time the river resumed its usual level the preceding month, no more fears need be entertained of a recurrence of the calamity. Unfortunately it was not so, for of late not only has the river risen again, but in some cases has committed even greater devastation.

The Times Lisbon dispatch snys: Prime Minister De Castro and Senor Garcia, Minister of the Colonies, agreed with Senor Gomes, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to submit the Dela gan bay question to arbitration. The proposi tion is that there shall be two arbitrators on each side, the, four to select a fifth to act in the capacity of umpire, falling in which the high counts shall select the umpire.

An exciting scene occurred to-day in the Chamber of Deputies. Marquis De Armijn, Minister of Foreign Affairs, was defending the Government against an attack made upon it by Senor Martos, when the members of the copos tion raised such a tumult that the speaker was compelled to stop. The excitement spread to the galleries. The President's cries for order were unheeded by the members, and the ushers were unable to restrain the visitors in the gal- leries. Finally the police were summoned. With great difficulty they succeeded in restoring order, when the debate was resumed.

We are now just entering upon the "Fu Tien," or hot period of the Chinese summer, This is supposed to comprise ten days of increasing heat, ten of even temperature, and ten of decreas ing heat-this at least is the theory. It may also be called the rainy season, since the heavy raine usually fall during the time when the tem- perature is bighest, the atmosphere, moist, and the heat oppressive...
