saying it would only cost about $1,000. In the next letter he said he might require other machi. nery in the future, and sent a flat. In engaging him we told him he might bring it out with him, but be wired that he preferred not to do so before reaching the mine: His instructions are to make all arrangements for wiring home for any machinery as soon as he sees his way ready.
Mr. Legge:You say he discovered the lode if 1886. He should therefore be in a position now to bring out what machinery he needs.
The Chairman:-No; having got down 35 feet he was stopped by water.
Mr. Legge :-He should bring a pump, then. The Chairman:-That is what he is bringing. Mr. Dudgeon explained that Mr. Hooper's object was to sink a shaft by the side of the lode, and drive levels into it. It was a mere matter of pickaxes and dynamite. The only difficulty would be with the water, and Mr. Hooper, whom he knew very well, and had often discussed the matter, was of opiolon that the native appliances were sufficient to keep the water down for some months. He quite understood that in time it would be necessary to have powerful centrifugal pump to keep the workings dry, but he (Mr. Dudgeon) quite understood that he desired to postpone its purchase until he Taw the necessity for it,
The Chairman:-He is bringing two pumps
out now.
Mr. Legge :-Then, having the pumps, he bas only pickaxes and dynamite with him.
The Chairman maid that was so. He then thanked the shareholders for their attendance, and expressed the hope that at the next meeting a favorable report would be ready for presenta. tion.

A, O'D. GOURDIN, F. HENDERSON,
Auditors,
The gross receipts on the Canton line compare favourably with those for the corresponding sx months of last year, and the earnings on the Macao lines niso show a.slight improvement. Running expenses, however, have been materially increased by the abnormally high prices of coal which have ruled during the period under review, the net result of the half year's working being an increase of $16,953.23 in steamers! earnings, which it is hoped will be considered satisfactory, During the half-year the Honam, Kiuklang Bod Fatshan have undergone the customary THE STEAM, LAUNCH COMPANY, annual Government survey and overhaul The cost of repairs to the Honam's bottom has been much greater than was anticipated at the date of the last report, and, it is expected that a further extensive outlay upon this vessel will be necessary when next she is laid up. Upon the recommendation of Surveyors it is, proposed in future to dock the Company's steel vessels every
ix months instead of annually as heretofore.
The electric light installation has been fitted to the Powan and is working satisfactorily. The repairs to the Canton Wharf mentioned in the lest report have been completed.
A steel twin-screw steamer for the Macan trade, to be named the Heang Shan, has been contracted for with Messrs, Ramage and Ferguson, of Leith, deliverable there on the oth, November next for the sum of £33,950, to which will have to be added the cost of certain extras amounting to about 1,000 not covered by the contact, and the expense of the voyage to Hongkong.
•
At extraordinary meetings of shareholders held on the 18th May and 3rd June it was resolved to increase the capital of the Company to $1,600,000 by the issue of 40,000 new shares of $20 each, to be issued at a premium of $15. per share, such premium to be placed to the credit of the Depreciation and Insurance Fund. It was further decided to offer the new shares to the shareholders registered on the 7th June, 1889 In proportion to their holdings. These resolu
lons are now being carried out.
The question of the insurance of the Com pany's fleet has been mooted, and it will be for The shareholders in meeting to decide what course shall be adopted.
The Honourable 1. Bell-Irving signed his seat at the Board upon leaving the Colony. Messis, Lee Sing, Poon Pong and L. Pocinecker. have joined the Board at the invitation of the Directors, and their election requires confirma- tion by the shareholders,
In accordance with the Articles of Association, the Honourable P. Ryrie and Mr. F. A. Games retire from the Board of Direction by rotation, and, being eligible, offer themselves for re-election,
