While Henri Rechefort, accompanied by friends, was walking in Regent street to-night and Pilotel threatening to strike Rochefort unless he met M. Pilotel. Angry words were exchanged, he assented to a duel, Rochefort drew a revolver and was about to fire at Pilotel when a bystander seized the weapon. Mrs. Maybrick, who was arrested yesterday on a charge of poisoning her husband, has been lodged in jail. Arsenic has been found in the beef tea which she prepared for her husband and also in a bottle in an ante-room.

NEW YORK, May 19th,

The new (win screw steamer of the Hamburg Packet line, Augusta-Victoria, has just com- pleted the fastest first trip ever made across the Atlantic by any steamer. The new racer made the voyage from Hamburg to New York, a dis tance of 3048 miles, in 8 days and 1 hour, an equivalent of 6 days and 2 hours from Fastnet to New York. Taking of four hours which the steamer was delayed on the 17th and 18th because of heated journals, the actual time. between Fastnet and the Sandy Hook lightship would be 5 dave, 22 hours and 30 minutes, or better than the great voyage of the new ocean greyhound City of Paris.

BERLIN, May 22nd. There was a parade of the Berlin and Spandau garriscos to-day in honor of King Hum.ert of Italy.

This afternoon King Humbert and the Prince of Naples visited Prince Bismarck. At luncheon in the palace the Emperor proposed a toast to King Humbert. Ha thanked the King for the mark of friendship shown by his visit to Berlin, and said that the troops he had just reviewed. were also grateful and proud of the honor done them. In conclusion the Emperor soil: "I drink to the King and Queen of Italy, to their brave troops, and to the unalterable friendship between Germany and Italy." King Humbert, declared that the unity of Germany and Italy formed the pledge of European peace.

The train conveying the Empress of Austria from Wiesbaden to Vienas met with an accident to-day. While the train was being shunted at Frankfort the last ear left the rails and three of them were upset. The Empress and suite were abaken, but nobody was injured except a footman.
