„GOSSIP ABOUT THE U. s. PRESIDENTS.

A Washington correspondent in the N. Y

·Tribunt gives an amusing account of the appearance, habits, etc., of the Presidents of the United States. It appears that the tallest President was Washington, whose stature was six feet four inches, and the shortest James Madison, who was not above five and one-half feet in height. Jefferson, Monroe, Jackson Tyler, Lincoln, Garfield and Arthur were all six feet or over. John Adams, his son John Quincy and General Taylor, each said to have been five feet eight inches, the same height as the President. As regards weight, Jackson, though six feet and one inch in height, was probably the lightest in avoirdupois, as he only turned the scale at 145 pounds. President, Cleveland, when inaugurated, is said to have weighed 340 pounds, but has probably increased somewhat

since.

All the Presidents, with two exceptions, from Washington to Lincoln, had customarily smooth- shaven faces. The exceptions were John Quincy' Adams and Van Buren, who wore high alde- whiskers. President Johnson was usually smooth shaven also. Mr. Lincoln wore chio and side. whiskers. President Harrison follows the example of General Grant, Hayes and Garfield in wearing a mustache and full beard. Presid ent Arthur's mustache and whiskers will be remembered, and Mr. Cleveland is the only President who has worn a mustache simply.

werd

Mr. Harrison's eyes are bige, agreeing in this respect with a majority of the executive eyes. Mr. Cleveland's are brown, as also Arthur'a and among the dark eyes were those of Mr. Harrison's grandfather. The

darkest eyes were those of President Pierce which were intensely black, as was also his hair, A number of other Presidents, it will be remem- bered, have had dark hair, though in a large majority of cases it was either gray or became gray while in the executive chair. Jefferson red hair, which changed to silver white in color, The Presidents, as a rule, bave dressed with uniform propriety, General Taylor may be regarded as an exception, as he preferred "fatigue" anit or dress suit very much too large for him in order to be "comfortable."

All of the Presidents have been married men, except Buchanan, whose romance has been fre quently alluded to. William Henry Harrison had the largest family, ten chlidren, nine of whom reached adult age.

None of the Présidents were rich as wealth is

now rated-none of them millionaires. The President-elect is said to be worth about $15,000 Garfield, Grant, Lincoln, Johnson, Pierce, Taylor, Polk, the senior President Harrison, Jackson and Monroe were none of them probably wealthier than this when they entered upon the duties of the Executive. Washington, Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, Van Buren, Tyler and Buchanan were severally worth upward of $100,000. Ex

“IN RE A GENTLEMAN, ONE".

When an attorney is called before the Full Court to answer for any alleged misconduct it is not usual to publish his name until he is found guilty; until then the matter appears in the papers as "In re a Gentleman, One of the Attorneys of the Supreme Court," or, more shortly, "In re a Gentleman, Ore.""

We see It each day in the paper,

And know that there's mischief in store; That some unprofessional caper

Has landed a shark on the shore, We know there'll be plenty of trouble

Before they get through with the fung Because he's been coming the double On clients, has "Gentleman, One." Alas for the gallant attorney,

Intent upon culling a dash, Sels out on life's perilous journey

With rather more cunning thân cash. And fortune at first is inviting→→

He struts his brief hour in the sun- But lo on the wall is the writing

Of Nemesis, "Gentleman, One." For soon he runs short of the dollars,

He fears he must go to the wall; So Peter's trust-money he collars To pay off his credi ́or, Paul; Then robs right and left-for he goes it

In earnest when once he's begun. Descensus Averni-he knows it;

It's easy for "Gentleman, One." The crash comes as sure as the seasons;

He loser his coin in a mine, -

Or booming in land, or for reasons

Connected with women and wing. Or may be the cards or the horses

A share of the damage have done. "No matter; the end of the course is

The same: "Re a Gentleman, One." He struggles a while to keep going, ... To stave off detection and shame;

But creditors clamomus growing

At length the poor soldier of Satan

His course to a finish has run -

And just think of Windeyer waiting

To deal with "a Gentleman, One-?"

And some face it boldly, and brozen

The shame and the utter disgrace; While others, more sensitive, hasten

Their names and their deeds to efface. They snap the frail thread which the Furies

And Fates have so cruelly spun. May the Great Final Judge and His juries

Have mercy on "Gentleman, One?"

JUSTICE AT LAST.

Ever since James, I of England, that "wisest fool in Christendom," issued in 1616 his

Counterblast to Tobacco, the devotees of the nicotian weed have been suffering under unjust imputations, and tobacco itself has had heaped upon it more abuse than could have been borne by any plant less hardy. It has been vilified to poetry and prose, thundered at from the pulpit, assailed by science, attacked, by the press and devoted to infamy by a literature almost as ex- tensive as that upon the subject of the other

twin evil."

At last, however, nearly three centuries after. the royal fulmination, the delightful weed has a chance of being vindicated, and of being restored to its proper rank in the vegetable kingdom. It is announced, on what appears to be unim. peachable authority, that the smoke of the tobacco leaf possesses almost miraculous disinfecting powers, this assertion being made as the result
