ACCORDING to the Manchester Guardian, the HONGKONG RIFLE ASSOCIATION. G. P. Lammert, 4th prize $4...... the annual income of the Ecclesiastical Commis- sioners from mining royalties amounts to con-
aiderably more than half a million; and there is good reason to believe that in all about £10,000,000 # year, on the average, are paid as royalties.
MR. GRIFFITH, the well-known photographer and artist of Hongkong and the Far East, arrived yesterday by the French mail steamer Natal, after a lengthy tour through England and America. We understand our old friend will shortly re-open his popular establishment in the Colony, where he is sure to command success.
At the Harbour Office this morning the second -mate of the British barque James G. Bain was cited before Commander Rumsey by two sailors, on a charge of assaulting them on the high seas. One alleged that he had been beaten whilst steering, and the other that the defendant ropes- ended him. Several other sailors were called, but as they did not support these statements, the cases were dismissed.

THE Chinese are trying hard to justify the prophecy of the Sydney Bulletin-that by and-bye they will be stealing the latitude and longitude, and end up by embezzling the earth. At the Magistracy this omning a coolie in the employ of the Pier and Godown Co. was charged before Mr. Pollock with stealing the printed trademark off bale of cotton. Yesterday the head coolie saw the prisoner tear off the canvas on which the marks were. Mr. Robbins stated that the Company suffered a good deal through this, as the bales were left on their hands. The prisoner was committed for five
weeks.

HONGKONG, THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 1889. ANOTHER pamphlet dealing with the clerical oppression under which the inhabitants of the Philippine Islands labour has reached us. "La soberanía Monacal en Filipinas" is published, in Madrid, and bears an Impartial testimony to the news which have often appeared in the columns of this journal about the religious intolerance, and the monastical scandals which are prevalent in the neighbouring Archipelago. The author of the pamphlet under review, Mr. PLARIDEL, takes the bull by the horns, and examines the Philippine monk, under his threefold aspect-the political, the econo- mical and the religious. As political factors "the monasticalinstitutions are demonstrated to be the most dangerous elements of national disintegration, as by the influence
THE paving of Queen's Road goes on slowly and splashingly when occasional showers refresh the workmen. It is needless to say that owing to half of the road being used at a time, jinricksha collisions have been numerous. We wonder what has prevented the Public Works Depart ment from entirely closing Queen's Road to chairs and rickshas, for a definite period, and from having the thoroughfare thoroughly repaired in its hole length. Chairs and vehicles could easily be made to pass along the Bund while the Central Road is being repaved. We think the present method of patching up the Road and repairing it by halves, highly defective, The work is now approaching complation.

ANY individuals who have been so fortunate as to own jewelry, and so unlucky as to lose it, had better call at the Central Police Station and see If it is in stock. A large quantity was seized this morning by Detective Sergeant Mann in a tailor's shop, 35 Upper Lascar Row, whilst searching for stolen property. On Sunday. MEN who isolate themselves from society, ae. cording to a writer in the New York Ledger, and have no hear and dear family ties, are the most uncomfortable of human beings. In the wilderness, and Sappho would have been compelled to matrimonial solitude with the man for Jack of whose love she made damp body of herself. LOCAL AND GENERAL. THE Ocean Steamship Co.'s steamer Anchlar from Liverpool, left Singapore this moming, and is due here on the ast proximo. WE observe from an American paper that Ethan Allen, the famous old trotting horse, still lives at the age of thirty-two at Byfield Parish, Mass. A MARINE Court will assemble at the Harbour Office to-morrow, the 26th inst. 3 10.30 am, to enquire into the circumstances connected with the stranding of the British steamer Afghan they become dim and cold. So, to have a brisk, AN Italian Opera *will be performed at the Italian Convent, Caine Road, on Saturday, the 27th instant, at 6p.m., in aid of the poor Orphans. We think the object for which the entertainment is given is a sufficient guarantee to secure the unconditional patronage of the philanthropic residents of the colony,
