AMOY

(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT})

Amoy, 20th March, 1989- There is no news of any importance stirring here at presen, everything being very quiet, bat the speculating and company promoting has reached this port, There is a scheme oh the board to form a sanitarium, niso a Laundry Com- pany with a capital of $,coo, divided into four hundred shares of $50 each. If the above scheme comes to anything I don't think that Globe-trotters intending to see the Yangtze any of the residents of Anny will put their money Gorges this year should be making haste. The init.. There is, however, room for a good hotel, end of March and beginning of April are probably here, and I think that if there was one started the best time of all; by June it is a work of under proper management it woull pay, but not danger and difficulty to get past the foaming as a fint stock affair as the directors' fees and Rapids. The trip is an easy one; there are secretary's salary would eat up the best part of dally steamen from Shanghai to Hankow from the profits, leaving out the management of it there to Ichang there are three steamers running altogether; so there would be mighty little for somewhat irregularly. At Ichang a native boat the shareholders. Ifa nalive boat be hired its owner bites it at his own risk, and it is his interest to secure as capable a crew as possible, no as not to have his boat away too long. Stores should be laid in at Shanghai, beef and mutton at Hankow. Up-country stores are generally the bad ones Shanghai sterckeepers had not the conscience to sell to their customers, and there being nothing to be bought at Ichang but chickens, possibly game, eggs, fruit and a few vegetables and rice. Bread can generally be got from the sleamer in which the tourist comes to Ichang; the stewards are often so obliging as to supply stores if the tourists have forgotten them. But It is well not to rely on this. In any case bed- ding and towels should be brought. It is not necessary to bring books or cards, the

The steamship Khive left yesterday for Singa- pore, via Hongkong, with aver 1,100 centies on board, I hear that there are over 100 coolies in the quarters provided by the Deli Planters Association waiting for the arrival of the Fidelio, which is expected to-morrow: most of them are Chin-chew then.

The coolic trade is booming here;, over nine thousand have left to seek their fortunes in the Straits Settlements during the past month and believe that there are about three thousand more waiting for transport."

The mistake most tourists make is hurrying. (bemselves too much. It is quite possible in three days from Ichang to get up to and back from The Shinton, the worst Rapid, baying passed the Ta-Tung, and Tung-ling, as well as through the Ichang and Ninkan Gorges. And in that case it is very likely possible to return by the same steamer, in which the upward voyage has been made, to Hankow. Return tickets for 100 Taels from Shanghai are available by all the sicamers. But hurrying through the Gorges like this gives no time for walking up any of the Innumerable glens, or even wandering along the paths by the side, and enjoying the fems and flowers and the ever-varying and great beauties of the region. Indeed, the burried traveller may rather be said to know there is a beautiful country there than to enjoy it and will go away with a confused noise of waters in his ears, of men bawling, shrieking, shouting, bowed to the ground like beasts of burden, all tugging at apparently immoveable junks beavily laden round apparently impossible corners. He will carry away a confused memory of precipices reaching to the sky, and deep waters, and exquisite vistas forwards and back. wards, or occasionally up some sidewis: glen, And through it all be will bave a horrid recol lection of poles and books that did not always catch, and a boat that sometimes spod swiftly backwards instead of struggling onwards, and at others turned round and round till he felt too giddy to count.

In the minor courts proper there is a stand of Manila cigars, for which Mr. Matthew Mitchell, of Gordon-buildings, Flinders-lane, is the Melbourne

agent, being the Maria Christina Factory, established in Santa Cruz in 1888, and following: also closely upon the Government relinquishing the monopoly in cigars. Of the 25 brands of | cigars, ranging in value (wholesale, of course)

company

divide their cigars into two classes, the one of a dozen brands being enclosed in a spiral wrapper, while in the other thirteen the wrapper is laid on straight. The first lot include all the more expensive cigars, seven of the dozen, which are all packed in boxes of 50 each, varying in price from $za to $50 per thou. sand. The finest cigars sent by the company to Melbourne are the Alfonsines, and after it is order come Primos de Estella, Brevas de Perez, Imperiales de Estrada, and Regalías de jimeno, The Primos de Estella are the heaviest cigars made by the company, a thousand of them turn- ing the scale at 22lb. Spanish weight. The ordinary trade cigars are very attractively dis. played in this case, and, as far as appearances indicate merit, there would seem to be little room for choice, as much the same trouble bas been taken with them as with the more expen sive brands.
