·· TO THE EDITOM OF THE "Hongkong Teluɑuarii." SIR, I read your correspondent” “Insurer's” letter appearing in your issue of last night with great interest, as it apparently was written by One who knows. something of the subject and who, if I mistake not, is closely connected with one or other of the two Companies specifically named in his letter. His remarks, however, anent the Hongkong investing public are hardly Justified by the facts which stare him in the face. There are joint stock enterprises in this colony which would compare favourably with enterprises brought out in other places and perhaps under more favourable conditions sa far as the wealth of the community is concerned, and your correspondent must be a very green hand in Hongkong if he has not noticed this for himself I view your remarks about the joint stock "boom" as being perfectly correct, and I feel sure a "Black Friday" will be upon us sooner than we expect if some check is not put on to this crate. My remaiks apply specially to what I hear is taking place as regards the conversion of private businesses into joint stock concerns, where the shareholders simply take so many, shares without ging into the merits of the scheme at all, and for the most part with the ulterior view of clearing out when the shares are at a premiuni. This Life Assurance concern, however, does not appear. to be one of these, "Life is a race that mortals run with death because they must, and not with any hope of winning. The great stake in the race is Time, and every year we live is so much won.
until suddenly it springs to view just before us. Then the race is over, for Death has won." Ism quoting the words from the Prospectus of one of the largest Insurance Companies in the World. It is a known fact that the advantages of life amarance are becoming better known to the Chinese community daily and one of the offices named in "Insurer's" letter derives most of Its support hero from such a source, and this too though the agency is in the hands of a gentleman who does not think it necessary to advertise the be congratulated for the success attending his concern in any way,, and, who, by the way, is to

There is no purely local Insurance Company, so far as I am aware, at any of the Chinese ports, or in the Straits, and despite what your correspondent says, I am in Hned to believe that the support in these places will be given to the local office, and I think your correspondent ferri as much, clse he would not have uken the trouble to have penned such a highly effusive letter at the same time casting reflections on our "local financiers. Our "local financiers" can afford to Laugh at this sucer for what it is worth, and at any rate the public generally, though perhaps not your corres pondent, considers our local financiers such as they "arm” good enough to entrust their money to, with what success the present craze is the outcome. The interest taken in this fifo scheme is at all events large enough to warrant the attempt being made to start it and, provided it is properly managed, I see no good reasons why this Company should not eventually absorby despite your correspondent's predictions, all the future life business of the place to its own ultimate gain and profit. I am sorry to have taken up 1 of your space, and enclosing my card,
