BLAME FOR THE WAR,

(FROM A SARAWAK CORRESPONDENT.) On the 12th February, Acting-Governor Hamilton of Labuan, accompanied by the Datu Bandar of Sarawak, went over to Padas. They had interviews with the officers of the British North Borneo Company and with the Resident, Mr. Daly, and afterwards proceeded to the house of Pangeran Shabandar, about a mile distant. After a friendly talk, the Shabandar engaged to leave for Brunel and take the bone of contention with him, namely, the murderer, the cause of the war. Hostilities then ceased between the opposing parties, and both were bound by promise to keep the peace till enquiries bad been made in Brunei about the affair.

"Well, no, I dont know yet where I will prospect, but I daresay I will gather some news of the colony in a month's residence in Brisbane. There's some talk about a place in the Gulf dis

there's some excitement about Kimberley." Dut I don't fancy either much. It's a goodiah bit off and will be pretty expensive. What I want to get on to is a middling good patch close to civilisation where, at any rate in the prospectus, the working expenses will be low and the staff plentiful."

"Something like the No. 1 North Phoenix," 1 suppested.

I think I know the mine you mean," he said. "At Gymple, isn't it 7"

I nodded. "Well," be continued. "Jimmy, old boy, it isn't every man's luck to drop on to a No. 1. North Phoenix, but if I can strike anything at all of that class of reef, whether there is much gold in it or not, I will make my pile. The fact is, some Acting Governor Hamilton returned to Labuan of my men down South have been hit pretty on the fath, and on the 15th a steam launch was hard lately and they must recoup themscives, sent for Pangeran Shabandar, who went to Brunei and as their names are good they can pop off a the following day with the murderer. i

At this enquiry it was set forth by numbers of witnesses that the murder was committed in Padas Damit, oat of the jurisdiction of the British North Borneo Co.; that both the murderer and the murdered man, two brothers, had always lived in Padas Damit; that the murder was committed a year ago, and that a squabble about a debt was the origin of it.

The Court also is said to have pronounced the Pangeran Shabandar innocent of the charges brought against him by the British North Borneo Co. The Ministers of the Brunei Government stated that the Pangeran had always been a faithful subject to, as well as a Minister in, the

Brunel Court.

Pangeran Shabandar, according to our corres. pondent, has offered to leave Padas Damit if the British North Borneo Company will fairly remunerate him. It is to be hoped that this will be arranged, though unfortunately it is somewhat late in the day.→Straits Times.

Now, I had hitherto paid very little attention to mining matters, but I knew from the rapid way in which a few years before ) had seen some of my acquaintances become opulent without, so far as I knew ever having handled a drill er a hammer that it was not at all necessary to leave town to go in for "mining" and, as Hughes seemed still the same old free-hearted fellow that he was in our boyhood's days, it seemed to me that I might manage, cultivating his acquaint- auce, to get into the secrets of the pactoliag stream. So after some more conversation I eventually asked him to make my little cottage up Enoggera terrace way his home while ha stayed in Brisbane, an offer which he accepted. I had also a hazy remembrance of having some years before, while travelling with doctor for one of the life assurance companies, had pointed cut to me by a young stockman whom we had fallen in with on the road between-well, we'll. say Tambo and Springsure a formation which he said he thought was a lode but which healso informed us had been unsuccessfully prospected while he was a bit of a boy. It seemed to me ahat if Hughes wanted a big reef this was just the thing that would suk him; and so, when sac night shortly after we had arrived in Brisbane, brought the matter up in a casual kind of a way; we settled down to smoke on my verandah,

Of course Hughes pricked up his cars a little when I mentioned this big reef. "Out Tambo way, you say ?" he queried. "Well, I don't know but what I might take a look at it if you will

come out with me and show it. That is out in the direction of the opal country, isn't it?”

"Yes," I said, "I think there are opals out there, something forber west than that though." "Well," he replied. "Suppose we go up by tail next week some time to Roma and hire a buckboard and drive out to take a look at it?"

The upshot was that one fine morning we left Roma, behind a pair of serviceable screws, in a pretty atout-looking buggy, containing blankets and tucker to stand out a week's trip. The day was clear. A heavy thunder-shower which had

fallen the night before had levelled the dust and on the gum-trees and vines pearly drops were still hanging, while the green turf was springy as an English lawn, 1 did not feel at all sure as to my ability to pick up the lode, except at one special place, where I remembered the small creek had cut into the gully and undermined a large gum-tree, causing it to fall across and forms a natural bridge.
