Therefore in teaching those doctrines formulated ten centuries ago the clergy are frequently forced to utter that which the world's knowledge has taught them to doubt and their people to disbelieve. (FROM A CORRESPONDENT}

Chemulpo, 22nd February 1889. There is very little now to communiente. I am of opinion that Judge Denny will be U.S. Minister to China in March, for it is quite possible that the Chinese Government has, with a view to getting him out of Korea, induced the new President to give him the appointment. If this is correct then comes the question of Denny's successor. 1 hope it will be Mr. P. C.

Mr. Schonicke, whose leave is said to be due, will probably leave us carly. It is to be hoped that Sir Robert will re-appoint him to his present post, where he is a great favourite.

The steamer Tsuruga Maru will be here on the 2nd prox, en route for Tientsin.

Rain is falling here to-day-the first for three months-and a thorough thaw appears to have set in. Hurrah for Spring! Let us hope it will bring not only a change is the weather but also in fortune of all those who came over to Korea in the early days and bore the heat and burden of the day,-Mercury,

But Science again inter- timefered with Genesis by showing that the carth was inhabited long ages before Adam's time. To this demonstration Theology vainly secks a reply. And, in matters purely doctrinal, the Churches continue to teach what neither clergy nor people can really believe. The burning place of eternal torment is one of the rocks upon which religion is founded, but the intelligence of the age utterly refuses to believe in any, such institution. In these, and many other matters, the clergy are forced to play a false and hypocri- tical part: teaching that which they themselves 16th February, 1889, We hear that Mr. W. C. As Tientsin is now an important political centre, it is desirable that England, of all nations, should be well repre- sented by a Consul respected by both Chinese officials, and British residents, and Mr. Bullock falfils these conditions perfectly.

In a week I was able to go to my work again. It doesn't seem possible, yet it is true; and the neighbours know it. There are plenty of witnesses to prove it. And, therefore, when I say I preach the good news of the great power of Scigel's Syrup to cure pain and disease far and wide, nobody will wonder at me.

The churches refused to alter or abate anything until the errors which now need excision and the practices which require cor rection are so manifold that if any alteration in any particular were permitted, the door would be opened to a series of radical changes sufficient to utterly abolish the churches as they now appear. The very need of sweeping reform is the one thing that prevents any improvement being effected. Yet to the clerics themselves It is rumoured that by order of the Imperial there is a danger in a continuance of the Chiness Government, upon charges of treason or present slate of things, for, indifferent to constructive reason, a former Secretary of Yuen ere, yet it may be that there are sufcient the Chinese Resident in Seoul, has been seized are, yet it are sufficient in Shanghal and summarily dee pitated.
