ON Sunday, an old Chinaman, whilst walking along the deck of the Honam, tripped over a bolt and fell headlong down the hold. He died in the Tung-wa Hospital to-day. THE liver is said to be the organ most speedily disordered by malarial poisons. The hand-organ stems to be the one least affer d, though generally so exposed to the exhalations of the gutter.

Andrew will shortly proceed to England to bring out a new steamier for the China Merchants' Co. On the 19th January, a Chinese constable, acting on information, seized 4,000 taels of opium, value $1,200, in a sampan at West Point, and arrested the three men who had it. The case was repeatedly adjourned, pending the recovery of Mr. Pollock, and was concluded to- day. The men admitted that they had no export permit, and were therefore ned $100 each, or three months' imprisonment each, the opium being forfeited.
SAYS the N. C. Daily News :-From a corres- pondent at Takow we learn that there was very, nearly a bad catastrophe there the other day. The barracks in the new fort at Apes' Hill took fire, and were burnt to the ground, and only the day before several tons of gunpowder were removed from them. The military are very busy getting the roads ready to receive the expected guns. As far as it goes, the new fort will be effective, and it is at a height, that will practically put it beyond attack from scaward; but it can be easily taken in the rear, and even if untouched, can do. very little for the general defence of the place, and is too likely to turn out
useless extravagance.

The prisoner, who was a powerful young coolic, made no defence, and was committed for trial.

The gunboat Garnet fonted at a late hour last night, and was taken into dock with great difficulty. The damages done are considerable, but the extent has not yet been ascertained.
PARIS, February 2nd. The new issue of shares to the extent of sixty million francs, which M. de Lesseps and the Board of the Panama Canal Company had arranged with a banking house, has failed to be taken up.

Mr. Matchitt, the agent for Messrs. Butterfield & Swire at this port, has been transferred to Tientsin to take charge of the agency there, and his place is taken here by Mr. Smith from the Shanghai office.
Changes are taking place in the Customs staff here. Mr. de la Touche is Imnsferred to New- chwang, and Mr. C. P. Dawson, the Assistant Tidesurveyor. There are other changes, but I Tidesurveyor is transferred to Takow as Acting

THE Manila Comercio heats that violent.shocks of earthquake have been felt in the province of Mindanao. In Cottabato a shock lasted more than a minute, and was of a terrifying character. The steamship Churruca experienced varinus shocks at sea during her passage to and from Cottabato, The steamer Mendex Nunes in one of her last trips to Pampanga experienced two strong shocks just as if she had run on some submarine rock. No damages were reported
