THIRD DAY-FRIDAY, 22ND FEBRUARY. "The Ladies Day," as usual, attracted the largest attendance of the Meeting, the Grand Stand utterly failing to comfortably accommo- date the numerous fair visitors, Charming weather and splendid racing left nothing to be desired, excepting by those whose speculations were not favored by good luck. The following selections, admirably rendered by the Band and Pipers of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, were greatly appreciated, and contributed in no slight degree to the general enjoyment.

Racing commenced with the Brokers' Cup in which Mr. l'ond on Alacrity upset a hot favarite in Violent by one of those well-timed rushes which are so closely identified with this fine horseman's face as a first class gentleman race- rider. Orlando was generally fancied for the Challenge Cup, and he improved on his last year's position in this event by winning a fine race from Vigour and Daphne in 3 min. 50 secs. -a capital performance. The Ladies Parse proved the gift it looked on paper for Hotspur, who was let in at least 7ib below. an his what he ought to have carried previous form at the Meting. After weighing in, Mr. Reynell, who steered; the winner, was presented with the trophy by Miss Ryrie, who gracefully complimented him on bis success. The Navy Cup proved another knock-down blow to followers of public form. Senegal leading all the way and beating Silken Mead by a short head, Bandsman, who was a warm favorite, tiring under his penalty after looking all over a winner, Leap Year had no trouble in repeating his last year's victory in the Kecchong Cup and then Arabic landed the Garrison Cup for Mr. Buxey after a show of a race with the rapidly The Consolation improving White Pasha. Stakes were won by Victory, who probably owed his success to a difference of opinion half way down the straight between the, riders of Dunkeld and Maleja, which led to a complaint of foul riding against Mr. Ruegg. whose inex cusable conduct in using his whip deserved the severest censure. Pao-ahing was heavily backed for the Champions at 5 to 2 on, and on yesterday's running the race looked a gift; the glorious uncertainty of the turf, however, again came to the Front, and Mr. John Peel's wonderful luck being in the ascendant, Orlando scored the fifth consecutive victory in this race for the Ewo "blue and silver," after a grand struggle. Another big field turned out for the Nil Desperandum; for which Glencairn and Soll were most fancied, and as the former got away with a flying start, he had no trouble in winning easily.

The officials worked hard throughout, and it is with much regret that we have to cavil at any detail, but it cannot be denied that the starting was far from satisfactory. Of course some allowance must be made for the fields being larger than in past years, but still Mr. Grant was in anything but his best form. The weighing arrangements were also most trouble some and unreliable, and ought to be moderaised before next meeting.

Odds of 5 to 2 were laid on Fao-shing against the field, and the same odds against Mr. Jolin Peel's stable found takers. Of the outsiders Gridiron was the only one backed for money At the third attempt the lot were despatched on equal terms, but the colours of Skipjack and Leap Year were at once prominent in the van, the mission of these second strings' being to insure a pace for their respective stable com- panions. The pace was very fast, the first quarter occupying only 31 seconds, and it was materially increased on the fit, the two leaders being closely pressed by Gridiron, Mont Brévent and Orlando, the Derby winner heading the remain: det. At the mile post-time for first half-mile 614 seconds-Gridiron had drawn within a length of Leap Year and Skipjack, the next pair being Orlando and Mont Bidvent, who were in turn just in front of Challenger, Pao-shing and Vigour. Rounding the turn out of the straight Mr. Maclean drove Gridiron alongside the leaders and opposite the bridge-time for six furlongs, 1.35-the Amoy pony, on the outside, led by half a length. Once in the straight Pro- shing rapidly made up his lost ground, but Orlando gamely responded to Mr. Hough's vigorous reminders and maintained the lead to the end, winning very cleverly by about two lengths, Mr. Pond ceasing to persevere a dozen strides from the winning post.
