The Customs Department have received during the first half of the fiscal year from the Chinese immigration tax $28, 61, compared with $5,095 for the corresponding period last year. The in- crease is due to the United States Exclusion Bill, several hundred Chinese returning before they were aware of the new law, preferring to pay the Canadian tax than to go back.. BUFFALO, N.Y., January Toth, Last night's storm in this city has had no parallel since 1871. The wind reached a velosity of 60 miles, an hour and worked sad havoc with trees, chimneys and windows. The wires are down in all directions. Such was the force of the wind that the water of the lake rose higher than since 1844. The whole of the Thirteenth Ward is three feet under water. The dry docks were flooded, and the vessels under going repairs were floated from their ways and sunk. The steeples on the church of the Messiah and the Baptist church on Prospect avenue are swaying like reeds and momentarily threaten to fall. The railroads suffered great damage, all the trains are delayed. The New York Central Railroad trestle on the Niagara Falls branch is submerged and the travel stopped.
