The British steamship Hailoong reports that she left Foochow on the 26th instant, Amey on the 27th, and Swatow on the 28th From Foo cbow towards Amoy had light north-easterly winds and fine weather, but overcast sky. From Amoy towards Swatow bad light easterly wind and fine weather, From Swatow to port had moderate north-easterly wind and fine weather. with overcast sky. In Foochow, H.M.S. Cock- chafer, and the steamship Haitan. In Amoy, the steamship Toanan. In Swatow, the steam. ship Chefoo, and a Chinese naval fleet under Matson Island.

The British steamship Provincia reports that she left North Borneo on the 31st ultimo; arrived at Kudat via Ports at 1.30 p.m. on the 8th instant, with mails, passengers, and cargo, and found there the 2nd officer and a boat's crew from the China Navigation Company's steam- ship Taiyuan, 1,459 tons register, seeking assistance for that vessell, ashore on the Royal Captain Shoal, Palawan Passage, since 1.30a.m. on Monday, the 31st ultimo on her voyage from New Zealand via Java to Hongkong. The boat left ber on Friday, the 4th instant, and reached Kudat on Sunday, the 6th, 140 miles. A note in pencil from Captain Vardin of the Taiyuan was handed to me by the 2nd officer, Mr. Bowie, which read:"Steamer Taiyuan ashore on Royal Captain Skoal, Palawan Passage, want imme- diate assistance." As soon as cargo was landed, we took on board the Taiyuan's boat and crew, cast off from the wharf at 6 pm, and proceeded direct to Royal Captain Shoal to render assis- tance. Reached the Shoal, next day at noon, steamed close up, and made a careful search but found no vestige, or sign of the Taiyuan. Concluding that she had got off the reef and had proceeded on to her destination, we turned back and proceeded to our final North Borneo port Sandakan, where we arrived at 4 p.m. on Thunday, the roth.
