24 The work of translating medical books has been continued. Thomas on "Diseases of Women" is nearly completed and one Volume has already come from the press. The Physiology has been revised. The treatise on "Theory and Practice" has been revised in part and "Diseases of the Skin" republished. The medical class has consisted of eleven young men and three young
women.
Daily religious services have been held in the chapel, Rev. Kwan Loi or the Rev. B, C, Heung conducting them and Mrs. Kerr presiding at the organ. The wards have been regularly visited by Bible women and native preschers, as well as by several of the missionary ladies. The schools under Mrs. Kerr's direction have been a valuable addition to the religious instruction.
It will be seen from the preceding table that the aggregate number of patients treated under the auspices of this Society amounts to 39,487.
It was proposed by Dr. Happer and seconded by Dr. MacDonald that the report as presented be accepted, and on this being agreed to the usual number was ordered to be printed in English and Chinese.
The following report of the Committee of Management was then presented →→

SOCIETY IN CHINA.
The fiftieth Annual Meeting of the above named Society was held in Canton at Messrs. Russell & Co.'s on the 23rd inst, when there were present-Dr. J. G. Kerr, Senior Vice President, in the chair; Rer. A. P. Happer, D.D.; Rev. Messrs. C. Bone, S. G. Tope, T. W. Pearce, B. C. Henry, F. Z. Simmons, E. Hubrig, Messrs C. A. Colman, J. Stenvall, J. Wallace, Miss M. Fulton, M.D.; Miss M. W. Niles, M.D.; Drs. McClure, MacDonald, So To Ming, Leung Im, and J. M. Swan.
The meeting was called to order by Dr. Keir, who on taking the Chair requested Mr. Henry to open with prayer, after' which the notice can- vening the meeting was read by the Chairman.
The Chairman then proposed that as the minutes of the last meeting had been printed and circulated, they should be taken as read. Mr. Simmons moved the confirmation of the minutes, which was seconded by Mr. Pearce and carried.
The Treasurer's account for the year 1888 was then presented, of which the following is a summary:-

2.-The Hospital buildings are in good con- dition, and nothing beyond ordinary repairs will be required during the year."
3-The cistern which Dr. Kerr undertook for the collection of rain water for the use of patients in cooking is not yet completed, owing to diffi- culties in the ground where the excavation was made. He hoped to complete it before the approaching rainy season, without much additional cost.
4-An examination of the accounts for the current expenses of the Hospital shows that the amount voted at the last annual meeting has been exceeded hy about $700. This is owing chiefly to the fact that an unusual demand has been made to supply medicines to hospitals and dispensaries aided by the Society, and to the high rate of exchange. The receipts for medicines supplied and sold at cost are an off. set to the large bill for medicines purchased, and, the actual outlay for Hospital expenses is reduced by so much, bringing it within the estimates voted.
i
5-At the last Annual Meeting the Committee was authorized to make arrangements for the delivery of Dr. Thomson's Semi-centennial address, and a meeting was called on the 18th of May, at which Mr. Chaloner Alabaster, Her Britannic Majesty's Consul presided. At the conclusion of the address, a vote to publish it was passed, Dr. Thomson wished for time to revise it, and in the meantime Mrs. Dr. Parker offered $105 to assist in paying the expense of printing. Your Committee recommend that the donation of Mrs. Dr. Parker be accepted, that the address be published, and that an additional sum be placed at the disposal of the Committee to defray the expenses of printing this address which comprises a complete and accurate history of the Society from its inauguration to the goth anniversary.

STATES AND EUROPE.
A case which has caused a good deal of com ment here in Bangkok for the last three weeks, came before the German Consular Court on
Wednesday last (January 9th) and ended in conviction of six months imprisonment for the defendant, Captain M. Fuetscher, late super- intendent of Post Office No. 2. The charge was one brought by the Siamese Govern ment for opening official and other letters confided to defendant's care as postmaster. He admitted opening eight official missives, received from the postmasters in Hong- kong and Singapore, addressed to the head of his department, but stated that Mr. Annuske, the former head superintendent (now in Europe) had authorized him to do so. After several witnesses had been heard for the prosecution, the President and members of the court retired to consider their decision and on re-assembling half an hour later gave judgment as above stated. The assessors were Messrs. Masius, Melerkamp, Sandreczki and Breuninger. The accused was undefended.

Captain Leyser came to Bangkok in 1863 and in 1872 invested $10,000 in a tobacco plantation at Ban Pla Soi, but the venture proving a failure he abandoned the business. About two years afterwards, he obtained an appointment in H.S.M's Custom House. In 1881 he left the Custom House to take a command in the Navy, and since then he has been especially noted for his courteous and unassuming manners, which gained him the regard of his superiors, and the cheerful and obedient respect of those placed in a subordinate position to him. His unexpected deccase is another instance of the King of Terrors being death-Captain Leyser was one of the most active no respecter of persoas," for at the time of bis and abstemious men in this community. THE principal object for which this Com

A subsidiary object is the supply of electric motor power wherever it may be required, and negociations are now being carried on with the Government to supply the necessary power for pumping water from the Albany Tank to a reservoir.or tank to ba established at the Peak.
The advantages of the ELECTRIC LIGHT are so well recognised that but little need be said on the subject. It is, however, peculiarly adapted for use bere on; account of its being almost
