ELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1889.

THE Vienna press was recently very indignant with Madame Sarah Bernhardt for having got up a little anti-German demonstration at Prague, where she has been staying. A deputation of students went to give her welcome, and the excit able lady improved the occasion by calling upon them to shout "Vive la France! They not only did this with a will, but cheered Madame Bernhardt for declaring that France and Germany were hereditary enemies.,

CARBOLIC, COAL TAR, BROWN WIND-enforced a century ago, and take to more SOR, WHITE WINDSOR, HONEY AND modern and practical systems of teaching, Utilitarianism being the motto of the age it goes without saying that it should also invade the precincts of the school, and transform those dull, dreary and unevent- fut domains of Doctor Syntax into the live- liest competitive arena for the disciples of industry. When we have witnessed a prize distribution in this colony at which the skilled accountant, engineer, navigator, miner, orindustrial studentshall be awarded a prize for his achievements in the profession he has chosen to follow, then, and not until then, we may congratulate our schools on their efficiency as training establish- ments, and on their general subserviency to the public weal.

COAL-DEALERS at Wanchal bave a lot to contend with. One of them caught a boatman in his coal junk yesterday, treating the cargo as though it were devils and he were a prophet-that is to say casting it into the sea. After a rough five minutes they stopped to take breath, when the coal-beaver explained that he was simply laying the foundations for a breakwater. It turned out that the offence was not uncommon, the thieves dredging their spoils up again when the junks departed. MASS BRADDON speaks somewhere of the "placid impertinence of a double eyeglass," but for cold, unabashed cheek a Chinaman can give even opera-glasses half-way round the course. Mr. Ullman, of Queen's Road, can speak feelingly on the subject. He engaged a carpenter yesterday to do some repairs at his house in Caine THE GERMANS IN SAMOA.

Road, and in due course took him to examine LONDON, January 21st. The Germans at Samoa have burned all the some locks in a room where Mrs. Ullman was taking tea. An English joiner might have American houses upon which flags were displayed,, scratched his head, or mentioned that it was and some sallors fired on a Captain and Lieute-dry job," or resorted to some other little subterfuge of the craft, but in this case Chips did neither. He looked carefully around, decided that it wasn't much of a job, anyhow, and then relieved bis feelings with a prolonged "hawww.kk!" like an infuriated buzz-saw, as though he were trying to fetch a section of bis lung up. He dropped the proceeds on the floor. Mr. Ullman naturally got as mad as a wet hen, and men tioned to him that he was no gentleman, where upon the joiner-man e ezred his throat again impeached Mr. Ullman's parentage, and offered to fight him. As he refused to either go on with his work quietly, or go outside for an hour and get it over, or do anything at all, he was led away by a lukong to the Police Station. He explained to Mr. Wodehouse to-day that he had onereo m

and in later years when the Mongolian pony superseded the thoroughbreds of England and Australia, Mr. “Fairoffer" was, in the opinion of competent judges, a good 5 lbs., better than the best of his compeers of whom Mr. C.H. Hutchings was probably facile princeps.. A powerfully bullt man, Mr. Bidwell had naturally a strong, firm seat, and he was alike an excellent judge of pace and a most deter- mined finisher. Many important races were won mainly owing to his splendid borse- victory of Firat Cornel in the Shanghai St. Leger of 1881, and it will be remembered that nt that meeting he won the one mile Criterion Stakes on the same pony, beating the until then invincible Prejudice, in amin. 43 secs.--the fastest time on important winners, his latest classic success in record. In Hongkong Mr. Bidwell rode many the colony being on 'Mr. St. Vincent's Ambas sador for the Derby of 1883, and his name was for years identified with the brilliant victories of the "Strath" stable, especially Strathavon, Strathpeffer, and Strathaird. The fastest pony he ever rode was, in his opinion, First Cornet, but he classed both Foxhound and East Wind as better cattle over any distance beyond a mile than the big wall-eyed dun. Like many crack" jockeys, Mr. Bidwell was a wretched trainer, and usually succeeded in faming or otherwise knocking up all the ponies entrusted to his charge. He believed in the "bucketing" system and carried it out to the fullest extent with most disastrous results. Strange to relate, the leading jockey in China was not in any sense a betting man, a. new hat being the full extent of his plunging, I must not omit to add that in addi- tion to being a terror on the fat Mr. Bidwell was a regular flyer across country, in-fact one of the best steeplechase riders it has ever been my lot to see anywhere. Bidwell had many faults, but he was not without some good qualities. He fell on troublous times at inst, but proved the same to the end. And now that, he has gone, may he rest in peace.

Although training for the Hongkong Race Meeting of 1839 has been going on since the beginning of November, the proceed. inga until this morning have not been of sufficient inferest to call for special atten- tion. The usual routine of trotting and slow gallops has been faithfully followed out, without any important incident having occurred. To-day, however, there was a very large turn- spectators and a good deal of interesting work was gone through. As at the time of writing the entries have not been issued, and 1 am not fully posted up in the names of the sixty or seventy griffins in training, my report must be a brief one, and in some may not be quite so, reliable as respects I could wish. Owing to recent rains the Clerk of the Course decided not to open the the training course had to be used, race-track, and excepting in two or three weak spots in the recently turfed ground it afforded sound and safe going, although being bolding in some parts it was rather against fast times.

The first racer on the course was the Tientsin

crack" Defiance, a big upstanding pony that will win several races if he gets through his training all right. He was merely cantered this morning, but it was ride to that he has an immense stride and gallops in irreproachable style. Mr. Boning's free going Subscription griffin, Springinsfeld, owner up. went steadily about a mile and a quarter, his last three quarters occupying t min. 49 seconds.

"A HINDOO/WIDOW LADY."

TO THE EDITOR BY THE "HongKong Talegraru." SIR,-In your morning contemporary of the 21st instant, I see some correspondence about Mrs. Pundita Ramabai from Mr. Francis, with the aim and substance of which I fully agree, and so will all right-thinking men and women. Mr. Francis invites the assistance of the ladies of this colony for Mrs. Pandita Ramabal in her single-handed mission, but according to my ideas it is quite impossible to get a sum of $10,000, and nobody will come forward to give such a large amount at one time. But if Mr. Francis will take up this charitable purpose and circulate a list among the community of this colony, including the Indians, there is no doubt that the list will be filled up within a short time. And 1. fully hope that every lady and gentleman in Hongkong will willingly give their mites in a work of such a philanthropic character. I would venture to suggest also, that since Mr. Francis has set the ball rolling, he must not pause, but do all be can to promote this highly laudable.

cause.

Thanking you very much for inserting these few lines in a corner of your widely read journal, 1 am.

Yours truly,

Hongkong, 23rd January, 1889.
