HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1889.
As we promised our readers yesterday, M. DE MAYRENA, King of the Sedangs, has lost no time in categorically and com- pletely refuting the scurrilous attack made upon him by the etiolate production of Lower Wyndham Street on Monday night. The spirit in which that attack was penned showed itself in every line. It was a mixed feeling of "We've nothing in the a d-d paper to-day" and "'ere's foreigner-throw arf a brick at him," that prompted the hireling to set a column of malicious abuse-verging more than once on the libelous-to the music of "Revela- tons," with the barest suspicion of truth as the theme and unlimited Inaccuracies for variations.
M. MAYRENA has done more than merely deny the alleged facts we are in possession of numerous letters which support his statements, and which any unconvinced individual is at liberty to peruse. With regard to the condensa- tion of the missionary's letter in the Courrier Haiphong, we have compared the two, and, as we expected, find it to be a one sided and unfair rendering of an account which M. DE MAYRINA's letters show to be entirely untrue in some points, and which are therefore inferentially inaccurate in others. But this letter M. DE MAYRENA has

The Chino Mail, says that I intended to purchase the Filipinas for $50,000. This is quite correct; and, if they will sell me the vessel at that price, it would not be hard to find $50,000 for making that acquisition. Transac tions are daily recorded of individuals who Purchase 10, 15, or 20,000 dollars worth of coals or other articles, and who find money when the commodity is worth double its cost. Your contemporary mentions the missionaries and their financial dealings with me.. I have never asked anything from the missionaries, and have never allowed them to interfere with my financial affairs. I came to Hongkong bringing a letter from the Bishop of Quinhon to the Rev. Father Lemonier, who received it, but being ill, had no opportunity of looking into my affairs, It was not a letter of credit; I never asserted such a thing. The Bishop forwarded that letter to me at. Quinhon, and here is an extract from the document, which I place in your hands to enable you to attest to its authenticity before your readers

There are many lines able enough to do that: the Messageries Maritimes; the Glen Line, the Blue Funnels, and a host of them. Sub stantial support to any line so coming out would be only too liberally given.. People even go sa far as to solemnly aver that vessels would be chartered, if no other course was open, to check this confederacy; such is the feeling prevalent if any just now among those most concerned. of these lines will not seize this fair chance, there are forces at work at Bombay to respond to the feelings of the people concerned. There are merchants in Bombay able enough to give solid and substantial support to any of the other lines taking up this route..

CHINESE EMIGRATION TO BRAZIL
We are informed by a Paris correspondent 4 that some merchants from Rio de Janeiro were about to send agents to Chiuz with a view to works, ia connection with the culture of the enlist emigrants destined for the agricultural
coffee-tree in Brazil. The immigrants were to place the slaves who, were discharged in May list, and the planters would probably treat them just as they did the negroes. As a strong agitation is going on in Brazil against the iden of importing Chinese labourers, the Chinese who venture to go there, besides the slavery they would suffer, would certainly become objects of persecution on the part of the European, and Brazilian workmen, who are already protesting against Chinese competition. Our correspondent adds that the Peking Government ought to be on the qui vive, and watch the acts of the Brazilian agents whose coming to China is announced, and that the European countries ought to take into consideration this new trade in Chinese slaves.

The facts of the case are these:-M. F
---An affair which may cause some diplomatic difficulty occurred this morning on board the French mail steamer Caledonien. Last week R. C. Passmore, an officer in the Customs at
Kowloon, was dismissed, and received $2,000 or $3,000 deferred pay. Instead of dis- tributing this amount amongst his very numerous creditors he decided to leave the Colony quietly, and for that purpose took a passage on the Caledonien. About eleven o'clock heard of this, and his solicitor, Mr. Rodyk, issued onc of the creditors, Mr. Schmidt, the gunmaker, a writ of attachment, which was given to Howell, by the French Consul and went on board the the bailiff, to serve. Howell got it endorsed Caledonten, which as a French mail steamer, is French territory. Many other writs had been got out, however, in the meantime, and on the authority of one of these he was arrested ashore.
