they put a fling centipede (wu-kung) in a box' for the traveller's pillow, and in the night when an evil odour announces the approach of the -Calling Snake, they o en the box, the centipede bounces out and kills the Snake with one bite. This snake grows to a weight of several thousand calties, and its fat makes a lamp-oil which when burning defies the wind to blow it out. (s) The human faced snake, of Burmah and Cochin- China; the female has a face like a pretty girl, with two feet growing tinder the neck, each with five human-looking fingers. Cut it in half, and it turns into a pretty girl complete. The male is green in colour, with a long beard; it will envelop and kill a tiger, but. retreats from a fox, which will attack and eat it (6) The "Jan," or boa, of Kiungchow (Halnan island), and Kwangsi; grows several chang long; it follows women, and the snake-catchers stick their hair full of flowers, and ca'l out "Hung Niang-12, Hung Niang-tz 1" (a pet name for a young lady); they throw some woman's clothes over it, and it then lies still, and they chop off its head, and run away.. The snake leaps about, and learn up young trees in its dying struggles before it succumbs to death.

THE NEGLECT OF LIFE ASSURANCE.

HERE is no feature of our civilised life that

than the neglect of LIFE ASSURANCE. By of a small quarterly subscription any payment man of good health can secure a very large sum to his family in case of premature death, yet hundreds of families brought up in comfort- perhaps in luxury are left in extreme poverty every year from the bread winner having neglected to assure his life. In the East many a man lives up to his income, knowing well that if death cut him off suddenly, his wife and children would be left almost wholly unprovided for. All this can be prevented by Life Assurance,

"Elfeda, something seems to tell me you NEW EDUCATED ANIMALS & HORSES.HE MAN ON INSURANCE COMPANY,

made this yourself."

"I did. Calithumpian. I made it with my own hands as a present for you. Ith a dressing. gown."

Mr. Magruder held the present at arm's length In the six and contemplated it with silent awe, months of his previous carcer as a devoted young hushand he had never been so deeply moved.

"When I gaze at the unearthly, gorgeousness of the gown, Elfleda," he said, at length, "and the conviction. slowly but, irresistibly forces its way into my mind that it is intended for me to wear, can you wander that I hesitate that I ask myself what I have done to deserve it ? Elfeda," he exclaimed, in a husky whisper, as he closed the window blinds. "I think I will try it on. Be calm, my darling."

"I am glad you like it, Callthumpian, You have been so good, so thoughtful, 90”—

"Heaven knows I have to be, Elfleda!" said the agitated young husband, wiping his fevered hrow impulsively. "Which is the upper frontier of this this magnificent garment ?*

"Here it is, Calithumpian. But before you put

it on, dear, just look at this design on the right shoulder. Isn't it nicely worked ?” 1

"Elfleda, it is absolutely paralyzing !" "You know what it is, of course ?"

I-1 think I do. It's the hanging of old John Brown,

"Oh, Calithumpian !! wailed the wife. ''I meant it for the translation of the prophe: Elijah!"

"It will do for either one. Elfleda," gasped the husband. he struggled frenziedly with the gown. "I wear anything that was made with your own fair hands, my darling,” he continued, as he got it in wrong side out and hind side before, it is was meant to he Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and looked like a three tent cirrns and menagerie in a tornado. Don't cry, Elfleda | I wear it now if it costs me every friend I have in the world. ld.wear it if Jahn Ruskin himerlf should ask me as a personal favor to take it off 1, Such love as mine will stand anything. FASHION'S FANCIES.

Morning walking gowns are severely simple, made in want of a single color, without ornament or embroiderly, and fashioned in a plain, flat- fronted skirt, bigh, close corsage and plain coat sleeves.

If heauty cannot afford pearls, she may con tent herself with one of the new pearl-finished silver bead necklaces, that are almost as becom. ing as the white spheres, and to be had at one- hundredth the price.

In all the bewilderment of cloak stuffs cloth promises to be far and away the favorite this winter and deservedly for the new textures
