A PRELIMINARY' meeting was held in Mesars Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s office, on Tuesday afternoon, for the purpose of promoting subscription to be devoted to a presentation to the 48h Regiment. AT a few minutes to two this afternoon a fire broke out in the upper flor of 99 Queen's Road Shing. The premises are low, but stretch a East, occupied by a contractor named Tai

No one was rally injured, however. When the engines got to work, the fmes were quickly extinguished, as the burning material was so thickly packed that only the top could bum. A pot of white paint was washed over a foreman in the Government Brigade, and plastered him liberally, and a little boy on a railing fell on his little head, which completed the list of casualties. At three o'clock the fire was out, and the place half-burnt and a quarter tumbled down. It was losured. The Volunteer Brigade turned up, but were not needed.
