IT seems rather significant that the British and the German Governments have resolved for the future to have the same magazine rifle, the same cartridges, and the same powder (subject to some experiments) in large and small arms. But they are not to have the same bayonets. · At a recent contest of bayonet v, lance at the Agricultural Hall, Islington, the bayonet doubled up and its owner-quietly, so as to suggest that it was nothing new-straightened it out and went on as if nothing unusual had taken place. Rears of laughter and cries of "Good old Brummagem!" followed.

IPECAC inhalations for various diseases of the Jungs and air pasanges are advocated by Murrell in the Medical Press. He reports six cases greatly benefited by inhalations of wine of ipecat In spray. He obtained most benefit from this in cases of chronic bronchitis and bronchial catarrh. In phthisis there was marked amelioration. A single inhalation will sometimes restore the voice in case of hoarseness due to congestion of the vocal cords. The spany should be given warm, and the patient should remain indoors for some time after the inhalation. Care should be taken in be sure the spray enters the chest and is not stopped by the arching of the tongue against the wall of the mouth. Ten minutes' spraying three times daily will suffice.

On rounding the bend we had suddenly come in full view of the picturesque vilage of Kotkai, perched in. an isolated rock overhanging the river, rising in a succession of craggy terraces some two hundred feet in height: a strong position, not unlike an exaggerated Loralai and one absolu. tely impregnable if held by European troops. On every loopholed terrace crowded a dense array of armed men in blue and white kurtas, their rifies and sulwars gleaming in the first rays of the morning sun, which only now began! to penetrate the rocky gorge, Some half-a-mile to their front, on a steep eminence commanding our approach, was a strong sungar occupied by. some two hundred men, the heights above being held by skirmishers who swarmed behind every rock and available shelter.

A tenant farmer secretly hostile to the National League found a blank cheque-book belonging to local branch of the League, and gave it to a Government official in Ross, who forwarded it to the authorities in Dublin for inspection. The book contains counterfoils of cheques for sums paid to solicitors for defending persona charged with resisting the sheriff, the counterfoil of a cheque paid to the secretary of another branch of the League, several counterfoils of cheques paid to a village shopkeeper, father of the secretary of the branch, for provisions supplied to evicted tenants, and of cheques for various amounts paid to druggists for chemicals used with the water thrown on the police at evictions.
