We are glad to see that, after a long spell of inactivity and a state of abandonment, the ground on which formerly stond Marine House in Queen's Road Central, is now being built upon, Judging by the incipient walls, we think a couple of imposing structures will be mised in that convenient locality, YESTERDAY afternoon Alfred Postlewhaite. steward of the steamship Victoria, was charged on remand with shooting a Chinese tallyman on the 17th inst. Dr. Jordan gave evidence as to the extent of the wound, which was in the middle of the check, the bullet lodging in the cartilage of the nose. The complainant, Le. Cheong, stated that he was tallying cargo when the bullet struck him, and that he had previously seen a man cleaning a revolver with wastel Mr. Pollock said that he was of opinion the revolver had been fired purely by accident. It was a pity the youth commenced to clean the weapon, but doubtless he imagined it was ubinaded. The third mate was to blame for Jeaving it loaded; it was negligent and repre hensible, seeing that a boy like the defendant had access to the cabin. It was lucky that the

THE servants who were suspected of having stolen the watch and chain belonging to Mr. J. H. Cox were to-day discharged. Mr. Cox said that he had only suspected them, and that they had not run away or been found dealing with the articles.
WE would specially direct attention to the vocal and instrumental concert to be given in the Theatre Royal,, City Hall, to-morrow`night hy Messrs. Kosca, Medina, and Valentin Fernandez. A very high class programme has been arranged, which, added to the reputations of the artistes, should ensure a large audience. i
THB annual exhibition of the productions of the members of the Sketching, and Camera Clubs was opened this afternoon in the City Hall. There were aliout to exhibits, the photographic section being numerically the largest. The part devoted to oils was quite up to the average, the most successful contributions being local views. There were several good copies, also, but two or three of the portraits were execrable. Among the watercolours were some really good. flower-pieces. The principal feature of the photographic section was the superiority of the prints shown by the members of the Singapore Photographic Club over the local examipies, all were very good, however, and many received honorable mention." FROM an advertisement in another column it will be seen that Mr. A. Hahn, Piano Tuner and Repairer, of 22 Elgin Street, has imported a new lot of pianos manufactured according to his own design, by Messrs, Hoof & Co. of Berlin. We paid Mr. Hahn's establishment a visit to-day, and were shown some splendid specimens of up- right grand pianos just landed ex steamship Note. They are constructed of black and walnut wood, highly polished and especially adapted to this climate, the adaptation consisting mostly in the elimination of all screwed. and. attached pieces, every part of the casing being made of a solid plank. LAST night a private on the 58th Regt, named Dudley, was getting into a 'ricksha" near the Seamen's Club, when an infuriated coolie "took him in the mouth" with a brick, lenocking tooth out. Dudley went for him, and although this morning he protested that he didn't know a brick from a buzz-saw he got a well deserved sentence of three weeks' imprisonment.
