remark. The opposition steamer Pagalwestock temporarily withdrew from the Canton. Hongkong lind yesterday in order to undergo repairs and as a consequence the longkong Directors of the Steamboat Co. promptly intimated that the Chinese passenger fare would, from Monday next, be raised from 30 to 50 cents. Hence the "boom." Whether this rushing up of the fare for Chinese is or is not good policy we do not propose to discuss here, but it was, at all events sufficient to cause a run to be made on the, Company's stock, and a considerabile number of shares changed hands all for delivery at the end of the present month -at from 217 to 221. For the end of the year a few minor transactions were reported at 294. Late this afternoon The barameter is filing along" the south-east count of Chios, auf in Lauzon, probably owing to the approach of the typhoon the market was a trifle weaker, but that heated on the stb instant. The British steamship Kong Bang reports that she left Bangkok on the 30th ultimo, and Koh-i-chang on the 2nd instant. Had mode- rately fresh west-south-west winds and fine cloudy weather to Puto Obi, and to Cape Padaraa light, westerly winds and fine weather; and thence to Hongkong light north to easterly winds with smooth, sea and fine weather. On the 5th instant spoke a Danish brig, showing N.M.H.J., off Daraích Head, wishing to be reported all well
The British steamship Thales reports that she left Taiwanfoo on the 1st instant, Foochow on the 4th, Amoy on the 5th, and Swatow on the 7th. From Taiwanfoo to Foochow had light airs and fine clear weather. From Foochow to Amoy had moderate to fresh north-east wind and cloudy weather. From Amoy to Swatow had light south-east wind and squally weather at intervals. From Swatow to port had mode. rate breeze and clear weather. In Swatow, the steamships Fooksang, Chefoo, and Wenchow.
