TO-DAY.
THE SHARE MARKET.
......
.5 o'clock... Share matters have been unusually quiet to-day. Nothing has been, reported in Banks since we last wrote, offers to sell for cash at 158 per cent. premium going unheeded. There have been inquiries for Docks at 34 per cent. premium, but no' shares appear to be available, at that rate) just now. Steamboats are n shade weaker than they were yesterday, sellers ruling the market at 216 ex. div. We quote the China and Manila Steamship Co.'s scrip 110, with sellers at that rate, but one operator reported this morning that he had done business for cash at rog, and had further shares to dispose of on similar terms. Our interested readers will believe just as much of these statements as they consider worthy of credence, and no more.
We are not in a position to define with unerring accuracy the true position in the toarket of China Sugars. The stock is certainly firmer than when we last wrote, and business has actually been done for cash at 185 and 186, and aho for the end of the year at 189, but there are elements at work in regard to this particular scrip which render it a most dangerous article te, meddle with unless one is in the storm. Perhaps it may slightly interest the General Agents, Consulting Committee, and share. holders generally, of the China Sugar Refining Co. to learn that the validity of the. Company's title to the Swatow property will in all probability shortly occupy the atten- tion of the law courts. Such, at least, is our information from Shanghai, and as we observe that the estate of the lately deceased claimant to the property is being wound up, there would appear to be a solid foundation for the statement. As the Swatow property has of late been something very like a millstone round the Company's neck, it might possibly prove an advantage rather than a loss if the Executors of the lale lamented. Harris succeeded in establishing their title-which, in our opinion, they are certain to do if they can find sufficient funds to fight out the issue to the bitter end
but as litigation is always costly, and as the question of back rents is certain to be raised, it would perhaps be just as well if the Consulting Committee devoted some attention to a difficulty that the General Agents have always been inclined to under- estimate. The policy of allowing a sleeping

slog to rest quietly is all right in, its way tongkong Observatory,, 11th August, 1888. but when the animal is only recruiting his strength by slumbering, the awakening has to be dreaded, and we think, it probable that it may prove so in this instance. It is one of the drawbacks of exceptionally clever people who, by the way, never carry enough ballast--to over-reach themselves; the acquisition of this Swatow property, by methods that certainly will not bear too close at scrutiny was a remarkably clever piece of work; but it had its weak points, as the China Sugar Co, may shortly find out to its cost. The late Mr. Harris modestly placed his claims against the Company at the trifling sum of five millions sterling those in charge of his estate will probably view the matter in a more reasonable and practical slight. However, we merely wish to throw out a word of warning to all those interested, that there are rocks ahead.
Sales of the Dairy Farm Co.'s shares.. are stated, to have been made at 13 and we hear that some Punjoms were transferred yesterday at to. The latter slock is now offering at to). Other quotations are practically unchanged.
